Off-Campus Community Safety Advisory 16-07 – Aug 7, 2016

Reported Crime: Armed Robbery – City of Ypsilanti-Off Campus

Location: 800 Block of Green Road, City of Ypsilanti

The Ypsilanti Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery in the 800 block of Green Road, at 8:37 p.m., August 7, 2016. A delivery driver told police he was robbed by two suspects with a gun for his cash. The victim said he had been conducting his delivery when he was approached by the suspects, who produced the weapon and demanded money. The suspects fled the area on foot, running eastbound through the apartment complex. The driver was not reported to be an EMU student. There were no injuries reported.

Suspect 1 is described as an African American male, (approximately) 19 years old, wearing a grey t-shirt, blue jeans and a red bandana. He was armed with a handgun of some type.

Suspect 2 is described as an African American male, heavy set, (approximately) 19 years old, wearing a black t-shirt and a grey bandana.

Off-Campus Community Safety Advisory 16-06 – July 14, 2016
Reported Crime: Armed Robbery – City of Ypsilanti-Off Campus

Location: 200 Block of Washtenaw Avenue, City of Ypsilanti

The Ypsilanti Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery at the alleyway off Ballard Street and Washtenaw Avenue at 1:46 a.m., July 14, 2016. A male EMU student told police he was robbed by a suspect at knife point for his cash. The victim said he had been walking with the suspect, and when they walked into the alleyway, the suspect robbed him. The suspect fled the area on foot, running westbound on Emmet Street, according to the victim, who was uninjured.

The suspect is described as an African American male, 6 foot, 2 inches, of medium build, 34-40 years of age, medium complexion, with facial hair, wearing a blue striped shirt, dark blue hat, and dark colored shorts. He was armed with a folding knife.

The suspect was accompanied by an African American female, 40-50 years of age, thin build, wearing a Michigan baseball hat, black hoodie, and a white tank top.

Off Campus-Community Safety Advisory 16-05 - July 7, 2016

Reported Crime: Felonious Assault- Gun, City of Ypsilanti - Off Campus

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a report of a felonious assault that took place in the 300 block of West Michigan Ave (south of the EMU campus) at approximately 12:50 p.m. on Thursday, July 7, 2016.

The victim, a non-EMU student, reported that he was walking through the former Key Bank parking lot, south of the Eastern Michigan University College of Business, when an unknown male pulled up next to him in the parking lot and produced a handgun. The suspect exited a blue Chevy Malibu, a struggle ensued, causing the weapon to discharge. Officers canvassed the area and were unable to locate the suspect, who left the area. The victim reported he was not injured during the altercation.

The suspect is described as:

Black male 17-20 years old, 5’-6, with short braided hair. Last seen wearing a gray T-shirt and white shorts.

Reported Crime: Armed Robbery – City of Ypsilanti- Off Campus

Location: Ballard Street City Parking Lot, 300 Block of Ballard Street, City of Ypsilanti

The Ypsilanti Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Ballard Street City Parking Lot at 11:22 p.m., April 18, 2016. A 23 year-old male, non-EMU student told police he was robbed by two suspects at gun- and knife-point for his cell phone, cash, and personal items during a drug transaction. The suspects fled the area in a vehicle.

The suspects are described as follows:

Suspect No. 1: African American male, 5 foot, 7 inches, stocky build, 25-30 years of age, armed with a gold knife, wearing a white t-shirt and jeans.

Suspect No. 2: African American male, 6 foot, 1 inch, chin-strap style beard, armed with a black semi-auto handgun, wearing a red Chicago Bulls hat.

Suspect Vehicle: A white or silver colored Dodge Avenger (or similar size vehicle), unknown plate or further description.

Reported Crimes: Armed Robbery City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus

Location: In the area of the Washington Street Parking Lot, City of Ypsilanti

The Ypsilanti Police Department responded to a report an armed robbery at 1:52 p.m., April 12, 2016, in the area of the Washington Street Parking Lot.  A 17-year-old male, non-EMU student was robbed by two suspects at gunpoint for his cell phone.  The suspect with the gun was known to the victim. The victim said he did not know the other suspect.

The suspects are described as follows:

Suspect No. 1: African American male juvenile, armed with a handgun, all black clothing, riding a bike.

 Suspect No. 2: African American male juvenile, all black clothing, riding a red bike.

March 9, 2016

The Ypsilanti Police Department has provided an update to the shots fired case reported March 5, 2016.  YPD is reporting that the investigation has determined the shot fired was not an intentional act of assault, but a reckless discharge of the firearm.  YPD has identified the person who fired the shot and has recovered the weapon involved in the incident.  The case remains under investigation and the Washtenaw County Prosecutors office will be reviewing the case for charges, if appropriate.

Location: 900 block of Railroad St., East of LeForge Rd. and North of Huron River Dr., City of Ypsilanti

The Ypsilanti Police Department responded to a report a single shot fired in the 900 block of Railroad St. at 12:55 a.m., March 5, 2016. An unknown suspect fired into the bedroom of a residence. EMU students were present, but not injured.

Reported Crimes: Felonious Assault – Ypsilanti Township

                                Shots Fired City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus

Location 1: 1300 block of Concord Dr. – East of LeForge Rd. and South of Clark Rd., Ypsilanti Township

Location 2: 800 block of Green Rd. – West of LeForge Rd. and South of Clark Rd., City of Ypsilanti
Washtenaw County Sheriff Deputies responded to a felonious assault in the 1300 block of Concord Dr. at 12:25 a.m., March 4, 2016. An unknown suspect fired into the front of a residence. A female, non-EMU student, was struck in the arm and sustained a non-life threatening injury. 

The City of Ypsilanti Police Department responded to the 800 block of Green Rd. for a report of shots fired at 12:58 a.m., March 4, 2016. Officers arrived to investigate and did not find any victims or damage.

Timely Warning 16-1, February 09 , 2016

Reported Crime: Unarmed Robbery – North Side of Pierce Hall – Main Campus

Eastern Michigan University Police are investigating a report of an unarmed robbery that occurred between 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. yesterday, Monday, February 8, near Pierce Hall (at the southeast corner of the EMU Campus).
The victim, a male EMU student, reports that he was walking through campus near Pierce Hall when he was approached by two subjects. One subject demanded the victim's cellular phone. The subject then punched the victim, and a struggle ensued. The second subject became involved in the struggle and the phone was taken from the victim. The victim reported that the subjects were last seen fleeing on foot toward College Place and Forest Avenue. The victim said he was not injured during the struggle.

The victim described the suspects as follows:
Suspect 1: African American male, of light complexion, approximately 26 years of age, approximately 5’ 11” tall and 230 pounds, wearing a tan jacket.

Suspect 2: African American male, approximately 24 years of age, approximately 5’9” and 170 pounds, wearing a black jacket, black pants, and a black skull cap.

Timely Warning: 15-18, December 17, 2015

Reported Crime:  Armed Robbery-Ann Street Lot- Main Campus

EMU and Ypsilanti Police departments are investigating two reported armed robberies. One robbery occurred on campus and the second armed robbery occurred just east of campus.

The first incident took place at approximately 8:52 p.m. on Thursday, December 17, 2015 in the south end of Ann Street Parking Lot on the eastern end of the EMU campus. The victim, a male EMU student, was struck in the back of the head with possibly a silver revolver while walking to his car. The suspects stole the victim’s backpack and fled west toward Ann Street. The victim sustained minor injuries and declined treatment. Officers checked the area with K9 assistance, but were unable to locate the suspects. The victim described the suspects as the following:

Suspect 1: Black male, wearing a dark jacket and a gray hooded sweatshirt with the hood pulled tight around his head. Possibly armed with a small sliver revolver.

Suspect 2: Black male, unknown clothing.

A short time later, at approximately 9:06 p.m., Ypsilanti Police were dispatched to the area of the 700 block of Jenness Street for a report of a armed robbery that occurred before the Ann Street Lot robbery. The victim, a male EMU student, reported that two black males attempted to rob him at gunpoint, but were unsuccessful, and then fled in an unknown direction. The victim did not report any injuries, and gave a similar description of the suspects as above.

Two suspects remains at large in two robberies involving EMU students.

Both robberies appear to be related, as EMU and Ypsilanti officers continue to investigate.

Timely Warning: 15-17, December 14, 2015

Reported Crime:  Armed Robbery-Green Lot 1- Main Campus

One suspect is in custody and a second suspect has been identified but remains at large in two overnight robberies involving EMU students. An airsoft gun (replica of a real gun that fires plastic projectiles in many cases), was recovered from one of the suspects and is believed to have been used in the robberies.

The first incident took place at approximately 3:12 a.m. on Monday, December 14, 2015 in the grass area north of Green Lot 1. The victim, a male EMU student, was robbed at gun point by two suspects. The suspects stole the victim’s property and fled north on LeForge Rd. The victim was not injured. Officers checked the area with K9 assistance, but were unable to locate the suspects. The victim described the suspects as the following:

Suspect 1: White male wearing dark pants and a dark jacket. Armed with a black semi-auto handgun.

Suspect 2: Black male with short dreads, unknown clothing.

A short time later, at approximately 4:50 a.m. on December 14, 2015, Ypsilanti Police were dispatched to the area of 950 Railroad St. (Peninsular Place Apartments) for a reported armed robbery that had just occurred. The victim, a male EMU student, reported he was robbed at gunpoint by a white male and a black male.

EMU and Ypsilanti officers checked the area and arrested the white male suspect; a second subject of interest is also in custody. A black airsoft gun and the second victim’s property was recovered.

Both robberies appear to be related as EMU and Ypsilanti officers investigate further and have recovered additional property and were able to identify another suspect, who is being sought at this time. Officers continue to investigate.

Reported Crime:  Armed Robbery – City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus

The Ypsilanti Police are investigating a report of an armed robbery that occurred at approximately 7 p.m., Thursday, December 3, in the 1000 block of Huron River Drive (north of the EMU Campus, between Mayhew Street and Leforge Road).

A male EMU student reported that he was walking east along the path on the north side of Huron River Drive from McDonald’s toward Leforge Road.  The victim said that a male approached him from behind and put what the victim believes was a handgun to the back of the victim’s head.  The victim said the male demanded whatever the victim had, and the victim turned over his wallet.  The victim said the male then fled on foot west from the location. The victim said that only cash was taken.  The victim reported that he was not injured.

The victim described the suspect as follows:

Suspect 1: Unknown male, possibly wearing dark clothing.

Reported Crime:  Attempted Armed Robbery - Green Lot 1- Main Campus
 
The EMU Police Department investigation of this case has identified both suspects.  At this time, criminal charges have been authorized by the Washtenaw County Prosecutors Office for one of the suspects, a 16 year old juvenile, who is currently being held in the Washtenaw County Juvenile Detention Center.

Reported Crime:  Attempted Armed Robbery – Green Lot 1 – Main Campus

The Eastern Michigan University Police are investigating a report of an attempted armed robbery that occurred at approximately 10:45 p.m., Thursday, October 15, in Green Lot 1 (northeast corner of the EMU Campus).

A male EMU student reported that he was getting out of his vehicle when he was approached by a male suspect who asked for money and he opened his trunk to get it for him. The victim indicated a second individual appeared and tried to push him into the trunk. One of the suspects produced a gun and announced a robbery. The victim reported that a struggle ensued, during which the gun fell apart. The victim reported the suspects then said the incident was a prank and they picked up the pieces of the gun and walked off in a northeasterly direction. The victim indicated he believes the weapon was a toy gun and said nothing was taken and reported that he was not injured.

 The victim described the suspects as follows:

Suspect 1: Black male, early 20’s, approximately 5’ 7” to 5’8” tall, with a high top afro style black hair.

Suspect 2: Black male, early 20’s, approximately 5’7”, approximately 200lbs, gray hoodie, wearing a black mask, and armed with a black handgun.

Reported Crime: Unarmed Robbery, City of Ypsilanti, Off Campus

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a report of an unarmed robbery that took place in the 1000 block of Huron River Drive (north of the EMU campus) at approximately 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday, October 14, 2015.

The victim, an EMU student, reported that she was walking home from the Eastern Michigan University campus and heading east on Huron River Drive when she was confronted by a group of five females who demanded her wallet. The victim reported she then gave her wallet to the suspects, who took cash from the wallet, pushed her to the ground and kicked and punched her before fleeing westbound on foot. The victim was treated at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for injuries and released.

The victim described the suspects as follows:

Suspect one: Black female, about 5’11’ or more, heavy set, dark complexion, wearing a black hoodie type sweatshirt and dark pants.

Suspect two:  Black female, about 5’2, about 115 pounds, wearing a black hoodie and grey sweat pants.

Suspect three: Black female, about 5”10”, medium build, wearing a black hoodie and dark pants.

Suspect four: Black female, about 5”10”, medium build, wearing a black hoodie and dark pants.

Suspect five: Black female, about 5”10”, medium build, wearing a black hoodie and dark pants.

Reported Crime: Armed Robbery – City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a report of an armed robbery that took place in the 500 block of Rice Street next to Frog Island Park (east of the EMU campus) at approximately 9:43 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, 2015.

The three victims, all females and non-EMU students, reported that three younger males approached them, each armed with handguns, robbed them, then fled west into Frog Island Park.  Ypsilanti Police checked the surrounding area and could not locate any of the suspects. The victims indicated they had been walking to their car when they were robbed. No injuries were reported by the victims.

The victims described the suspects as follows:

Suspect one:  A younger male of unknown skin color, about 5'5" to 5'7", 100 pounds, very lean build, wearing a black hooded sweat shirt, black ski mask and dark pants.

Suspect two:  A younger male of unknown skin color, about 5'5" to 5'7", 100 pounds, very lean build, wearing a black hooded sweat shirt, black ski mask and dark pants.

Suspect three: A younger male of unknown skin color, about 5'5" to 5'7", 100 pounds, very lean build, wearing a light colored hooded sweat shirt, black ski mask and dark pants.

 Reported Crime: Armed Robbery – City of Ypsilanti -- Off Campus

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a report of an armed robbery that took place in the 900 block Washtenaw Avenue (south of the EMU campus) at approximately 9:52 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2015. The victim, an EMU student, reported that three men approached him and one of them pulled a black handgun, robbed him, then fled west on Cross Street.  Ypsilanti Police checked the surrounding area and could not locate any of the suspects. The victim indicated he had been walking on Washtenaw Avenue from Summit Street and he believed the men had been following him.

The victim described the suspects as follows:
Suspect one:  Black male between 17 and 22 years old, medium complexion, about 5'9" to 5'11", wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans. (Pointed black handgun at the victim).

Suspect two:  Black male between 17 and 22 years old, medium complexion, about 5'9" to 5'11", wearing a red Chicago Bulls sweat shirt, and dark pants.

Suspect three: Black male between 17 and 22 years old, medium complexion, about 5'9" to 5'11", wearing a black hooded sweat shirt and dark jeans.

Timely Warning 15-11, August 11, 2015

Reported Crime: Home Invasion/Felonious Assault/Armed Robbery – City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus

The Ypsilanti Police Department, Eastern Michigan University Police Department, and Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department responded to a report of a home invasion that occurred at approximately 12:34 a.m. on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 in the 600 block of Emmet Street (south of the EMU campus). The victims, four male EMU students, said they heard a noise coming from an open back bedroom window. The victims said they all went to investigate with baseball bats and discovered two suspects in their residence. One of the suspects produced a black handgun and fired a round in their direction, telling them to drop the bats. The suspects then grabbed some cash and a bag of marijuana before fleeing on foot in an unknown direction, according to the victims. The victims reported no injuries.

The victims described the suspects as follows:

Suspect one : Black male, dark complexion, 6’1”, lean build, 180 pounds, short pointed dreadlocks, last seen wearing a black shirt and dark track pants (pointed and shot gun at victims).

Suspect two: Black male, light skinned, 5’8”, lean build, short hair, last seen wearing a light grey, long sleeve shirt and long dark track pants.

Reported Crime: Felonious Assault – City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a report of a shooting that occurred at approximately 12:50 a.m. on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 in the 600 block of Green Road near LeForge Road, north of the EMU campus.

The victim, a male, non-EMU student, suffered a gunshot wound and was transported by a friend to the hospital for treatment.

The investigation reveals that the victim was shot by an unknown black male, driving an older black Dodge Durango, as the victim and a friend approached an apartment building.

The Durango fled the scene after the shooting.

 Reported Crime - Unlawful discharge/Shots fired – City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus

 Location: 300 Block of N. Hamilton

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a shots fired call that occurred in the area of the 300 block of North Hamilton at approximately 4:15 p.m. on July 21, 2015. The Ypsilanti Police Department and Eastern Michigan University Police Department checked the area and were unable to locate the suspect. At this time there are no injuries reported.

Suspect description: B/M 5’10” 160lbs wearing a red tee-shirt and basketball shorts.

Reported Crime - Unlawful discharge/Shots fired – City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus

Location: 500 Block of W. Cross

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a shots fired call that occurred in the area of W. Cross and Ballard Street at approximately 1:04 p.m. on July 18, 2015. The Ypsilanti Police Department and Eastern Michigan University Police Department were able to stop a vehicle that was reportedly involved in the incident and the three occupants were detained. No further information is available at this time.

Location: Eastern Michigan University Financial, a division of the University Of Michigan Credit Union near Jenness Street and Saint Johns Street, just east of the Eastern Michigan University campus.

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a robbery at this location that occurred at approximately 10:24 am today, July 9, 2015.  No weapon was observed.  

Subject description: black male, last seen wearing a black cap, white frame glasses, tan jacket, blue shirt and blue jeans. 

The subject left the location on foot, heading east away from the EMU Campus.  There were no reported injuries.

Based upon the thorough investigation of this incident by the Ypsilanti Police Department, two subjects have been arrested and are currently in custody.  The Ypsilanti Police Department is seeking charges for the two subjects through the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s office.

Incident:  Home Invasion and Attempted Sexual Assault - Off Campus

Location:  1000 block of Washtenaw Avenue, City of Ypsilanti

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a report of a home invasion and attempted sexual assault in the 1000 block of Washtenaw Avenue, in the area of Oakwood Street and Washtenaw Avenue, just south of campus.  The incident occurred todayat approximately 6:50 a.m.  The female victim, who is not an EMU student, suffered a minor injury, and describes the suspect as an African American male, of medium build and wearing a white T-shirt and possibly black shorts, who fled in an unknown direction.

Timely Warning 15-5, May 4, 2015

 Incident: Armed Robbery – Off Campus

Location:  On South Summit Street near North Congress Street, City of Ypsilanti (south of campus)

Occurred: May 4, 2015 at approximately 10:12 p.m.

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that occurred at the corner of South Summit Street and North Congress Street.  The victim (a non-EMU student) advised that as he was walking south on South Summit Street when he was approached by three individuals walking north.  The victim said that suspect one pulled out a black semi-automatic handgun and stated that "this is a stick up."   The victim said that a second suspect stood to his right and then a third man went behind him and took his wallet out of the victim’s rear pocket.  The victim said that the second suspect hit him in the face with his fist, and then all the suspects fled south on South Summit Street.  The victim said the suspects then fled west on North Congress Street before crossing the road towards Recreation Park, where the victim lost sight of them. The victim suffered a small cut on his face and did not seek medical attention.

The victim described the suspects as:

Suspect One: Dark skinned African American male, 5'10", scruffy facial hair, late 20s to early 30s, wearing dark clothing, pointed a black semi-automatic handgun at the victim.

Suspect Two: Dark skinned African American male, 5'10", afro style hair, mustache, pointy goatee, early 20s, wearing a light blue tank top/jersey, who struck the victim in the face.

Suspect Three: Dark skinned African American male, early 20s, who took the victim’s wallet from his back pocket.

Incident: Unarmed Robbery
Location:  800 block of Green Road, City of Ypsilanti (north of campus, off Leforge Road)

Occurred: March 24, 2015 at approx 11:45 p.m.

The Ypsilanti Police are investigating a report of an unarmed robbery which that occurred in the 800 block of Green Road in the City of Ypsilanti on Tuesday evening, at around 11:45 p.m.  The female victim, a non-EMU student, reports after parking her car in the lot, being punched in the face and falling down.  The suspect removed her cell phone from her pocket and fled on foot from the area. 

The victim describes the suspect as an African American male, about 5' 5" tall, in his twenties, wearing a white sweatshirt, blue jeans, and wristbands on his right wrist.

REPORTED CRIME: Armed Robbery – City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a report of an armed robbery that occurred at approximately 1:49 a.m. on Friday, January 23, 2015 at 1000 North Huron River Drive, at the Peninsular Place Apartment Complex.  The victim, a pizza delivery driver and non-EMU student, was making a pizza delivery and reported being approached by two suspects, who produced a black hand gun and told the victim to give them all his money.  The suspects fled on foot northbound on Leforge Road.  Ypsilanti Police Department and Eastern Michigan University officers checked the area, but were unable to locate the suspects.

The victim describes the suspects as follows:

Suspect one: Dark skinned, thin black male, with a black handgun, last seen wearing a black hooded sweat shirt, black gloves, and a bandana over his face.

Suspect two: Light skinned, thin black male, last seen wearing a grey hooded sweat shirt, dark pants, black gloves and a bandana over his face.

REPORTED CRIME: Aggravated Assault – City of Ypsilanti – Off Campus

The Ypsilanti Police Department is investigating a report of an aggravated assault that occurred at approximately 4:05 a.m. on Sunday, January 18, 2015 in the area of Washtenaw Avenue and Normal Street.

The victim, a non EMU student, reported being approached by a suspect asking for a cigarette as she was walking. The victim stated the suspect struck her in the face several times and then tried to drag her into an adjacent alley. The victim was able to get away. The suspect fled on foot heading west on Washtenaw. YPD & EMU Officers checked the area, but were unable to locate the suspect.

The victim describes the suspect as follows:

Suspect: Black male approximately 50 to 60 years old, 5-8, medium build, with a pock-marked face, a mustache, last seen wearing a black winter hat, dark puffy coat and dark pants.
