WHAT IS THE ACCELERATED PROGRAM?

The three-year accelerated baccalaureate degree program allows academically talented high school students the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree in three years. Many Eastern Michigan University (EMU) majors may be completed in three years. Contact the Academic Advising Center at 734.487.2171 for information on specific majors.

Excluded from the accelerated program are some health fields, teacher education, and any major with extensive internship requirements.

AM I ELIGIBLE?

Students who meet the following criteria are eligible for the accelerated program:

  • Currently enrolled in high school.
  • At least 16 college credits earned before beginning the first year at EMU. These credits may be earned through Advanced Placement (AP) testing, College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), or dual enrollment between high school and EMU or other post-secondary institutions.
  • 3.5 cumulative high school GPA or higher.
  • ACT composite score of 24 or higher or SAT combined score of 1130 or higher.

If you are a high school junior who is considering the accelerated degree program, you should meet with your high school counselor to determine eligibility and plan your course selections accordingly.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION?

  • Earn 36 credit hours at EMU each year for three years.
  • Declare a major at the time of first enrollment at EMU (changing majors will lead to disqualification from the accelerated program).
  • File an approved program of study with an adviser.
  • Schedule and attend meetings with your academic adviser before registering for classes each semester.
  • Register for each semester during the early registration period (students in the accelerated program will be granted priority registration times).
  • Fulfill all regular academic requirements and abide by all policies of the University.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THE PROGRAM?

  • You will gain earlier entrance into the job market or graduate/professional studies.
  • You will save approximately one year of college costs.
  • You are guaranteed at least a Recognition of Excellence Scholarship worth $2,000 per year provided you meet the renewal criteria. The Recognition of Excellence Scholarship requires 18 credit hours per semester for payment and a 3.3 cumulative EMU GPA for renewal. University scholarships require the recipient to live in University residence halls during the first two years.
  • You will receive a graduation incentive of $1,000 when you complete the accelerated program and return to EMU within one year for graduate studies.
  • If there is a University-caused delay that prevents you from completing your degree, EMU will pay the tuition for the remaining class(es) provided that the degree is completed within one year.

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

Be sure to indicate to your high school counselor that you are interested in the three-year accelerated program at EMU. During your senior year of high school you will need to:

  • Complete an application for admission to the University and submit it by the February 15 priority deadline, along with your official high school transcript and the application fee.
  • Indicate on the application an interest in the three-year accelerated program (you may do this by attaching a brief note to the front of the application).
  • Discuss your eligibility with your EMU academic adviser during your initial appointment and initiate the Official Program Agreement by the May 15 priority deadline.

Final admission into the program is granted after your Official Program Agreement is signed by you, approved by your academic adviser, and approved by your faculty sponsor.
