Initial Advising and Registration

Students admitted to Eastern Michigan University are advised their first semester by personnel of the Academic Advising Center (AAC). Exceptions are:

  • All Music majors
  • All transfer Art majors

who are advised by faculty advisors within these departments, due to additional conditions of admission or special permission for certain courses. Students will be given course suggestions by AAC personnel. Students will receive help in choosing classes from the Class Schedule and how to use the my.emich Registration system.

INDIVIDUALIZED ADVISING AGREEMENT

After their initial advising, students receive an Individualized Advising Agreement, which identifies where on-going advising will take place. If students remain "undeclared" their first semester, they will receive advising through the Academic Advising Center (AAC). With the additional exceptions of PASS, and Individualized Study Program majors, all other students are assigned for advising to the department of their major, as well as, the College's Advising Center for their major; business students, however, are assigned to the Assistant Dean of the College of Business if not yet admitted to the College.

WAIVER OF ACADEMIC ADVISING

Students may choose to have their academic advising waived. AAC does not recommend this option. However, sometimes a student may have spoken with his/her advisor within the department of his/her major. In this case, the student has learned about the program, the General Education requirements, and would know which classes to take during his/her first semester. Yet, even in this situation, the student will be losing some important information. If you would like to waive your academic advising, you may print the "Waiver of Academic Advising" form , complete it, sign, and fax, mail, or bring it to:
