Transfer Policies
Once a student has been admitted as a transfer, the Office
of Admissions forwards the transcript or transcripts
to Transfer Services for
evaluation. The student will contact the Academic
Advising Center (AAC) to make an appointment
to speak with an advisor.
Once the appointment is made, AAC will request an evaluation
of transfer credit if not already complete. (Check you’re
my.emich student record to see if your transfer credit has already
been evaluated.) During the students'
initial advising session, the advisor will
explain how transfer credit will apply to the General Education
requirements. Further evaluation of transfer credits
toward specific
requirements
may need to be
made by
the
appropriate academic department.
Only courses with grades of 2.0 (C) or higher may be
transferred to the University. Grades do not transfer, only
the credit will transfer and the student’s grade point
average (GPA) will be based only on Eastern Michigan University
(EMU) course work. Official
transcripts
are kept on file in the Office
of Records and Registration. Some academic departments refer
to these for second admission purposes.
You may e-mail
questions regarding your accepted credits to Transfer
Services in the Admissions office.

General Rules About Transferring Credit
To be awarded transfer credit to EMU, your coursework must
meet the following requirements:
- The
course must be a college level
course (generally numbered 100 or higher).
- Some courses, even at 100-level or above, may not transfer,
without being evaluated and approved by an academic department
at EMU.
- You
must have earned a “C” (2.0) or higher grade in
the course.
- You
will be awarded the number of credit hours the course held
when you took it. For example, if you took a 2-credit composition
course
and you
transfer it to EMU, you will receive two credits, even though
it
may be equivalent to ENGL 121, which is a 3-credit course
at EMU. Or,
if you
took a 4-credit
composition course, you will be awarded four credits. [Note:
if the institution you attended was on the “quarter” system, the credits will be reduced to
two-thirds credit when applied at EMU, because EMU is on the “semester” system.]
- For courses to be applied to EMU general education requirements,
they must be worth at least 2 credit hours when applied to EMU
as credit.
- Grades earned at another institution do not transfer to EMU;
transfer grades and credit hours are not included when calculating
an EMU grade point
average (GPA).
- An
unlimited number of transfer credits will be considered for
EMU credit from any accredited college or university when
the above conditions have
been met. However, transfer students must earn a minimum of 60
semester hours exclusive of junior or community college credit;
at least 30 of
these 60
semester hours must be earned through EMU (except where an exception
exists through an articulation agreement).
Further
evaluation may be necessary when transfer credit
has been applied without a direct equivalency at EMU.
The Academic Advising
Center is
authorized to apply credits, in most instances,
toward the general education requirements,
provided such credits come from other than Michigan community
colleges
which have already been defined. Other credit
application will be handled through
academic departments. |
