ECHT History 101: Western Civilization to 1648 - Autumn, 2003
Professors Knutson and Slafter
______________________________________________________________________________

Western Civilization will trace the development of Europe’s awareness of itself as a specifically ‘Western’ society. The essential building blocks in this development will be Greece, Rome, the Church, the Germanic invasions, feudalism, the guilds, the Renaissance, and European expansion overseas. The Byzantine Empire, Islam, and Russia will also make their appearance, but will feature as cultures in opposition to which the image of the West was created.
