RICH ANTIQUITY, BREATHTAKING VIEWS, LIFE DURING AND AFTER COMMUNISM, PARTICIPATION IN ARCHAEOLOGY, AND SWIM BREAKS ON THE IONIAN COAST!
Program Description:
Albania (Shqipëria - Land of the Eagles) has a rich ancient to modern culture history – Paleolithic-Neolithic, Illyrian-Hellenic, Illyrian-Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Soviet periods, rivaling that of neighboring Greece and Italy, and has some of the most breathtaking landscapes of Europe. Having recently shifted away from Soviet-style communism, Albania has opened its doors to foreign commerce, tourism, and scientific investigations. One of Albania’s challenges in this new millennium is to harness the richness of its culture history and natural beauty to develop heritage-based and ecologically-friendly tourism industries. Students can be a part of these historic developments in Albania.
Participants will see much of the southern half of the nation and will participate in an archaeological project. There will be guided culture history tours between Tirana (the nation’s capital) and the southern city of Gjirokastra, which itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its medieval architecture and domineering castle. Students will have museum tours and lectures, visit archaeological sites (of the Illyrian-Hellenic, Illyrian-Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods), learn about the culture, the Bektashi Islamic order, Orthodox Christianity, and the transition from communism from members of the generation experiencing it first-hand. Students will also learn the basics of archaeological fieldwork as they join Albanian students in excavations at one or more ancient sites while staying in Sarande, which is on the Ionian Coast and has beaches for resting and swimming after the fieldwork.
Undergraduate students earn 3 credits taking ANTH379 Culture History and Archaeology in Albania.
Graduate students earn 3 credits taking ANTH599 Culture History and Archaeology in Albania.

Brad Ensor teaches archaeology and cultural anthropology in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminology at Eastern Michigan University. He has directed archaeological investigations at ancient sites in Mexico, North America, and Albania. Ensor has been travelling in and developing an archaeological project in Southern Albania, which has a rich culture history going back to the Bronze Age and before. He has a great appreciation for people’s life experiences during and after communism, the dramatic political and economic changes taking place today, and the extraordinary challenges people face as the nation tries to develop in this new era. In addition to the rigorous fieldwork and spectacular landscapes, some of his favorite pastimes in Albania are exploring the mountainous and coastal regions of the south, meeting local people, sipping Turkish Coffee, indulging in regional organic foods, and relaxing on an Ionian beach.
