Albania

Tirana with Skanderberg and Mosque

Culture History and Archaeology
in Post-Communist Albania


Tentative Itinerary: Summer 2009


Saturday-Sunday, 15-16 August
- Flights to Tirana
(Note - Dr. Ensor will already be in Albania attending to the archaeology project and will not fly with the students. However, he will be at the airport to pick up the students upon their arrival). Overnight stay in hotel.


Monday, 17 August - Tirana
Tours in Tirana: the National Museum, the Main Mosque and city castle, the Avenue of the Martyrs, the Youth Park, and the Archaeology Museum. Overnight stay in hotel.


Tuesday, 18 August - Travel from Tirana to Gjirokastra
Spectacular landscapes and tours at ancient Apolonia and Bylis (Illyrian sites of the Greco and Roman periods). Overnight stay in house/dormitory.


Wednesday, 19 August - Gjirokastra
Tours and spectacular landscapes in Gjirokastra and the Drinos River Valley: Gjirokastra, the Citadel, the Ethnographic Museum, and the ancient sites of Antigonea.(associated with Pyrrhus of Epirus) and Melan (with an Ottoman period-present Bektashi tekke - place of worship) near the Greek border. Overnight stay in house/dormitory.


Thursday-Saturday, 20-22 August
- Gjirokastra and Archaeology
Daily 8 hours of archaeological fieldwork at the Illyrian site of Lazarat (Roman period) and laboratory work while staying overnight in Gjirokastra. There may be short excursions in the Drinos River Valley. Overnight stay in house/dormitory.


Sunday, 23 August - Sarande and Butrint
Brunch at the seaside city of Sarande. Tour of Butrint - a coastal national park and the most famous Greco-period archaeological site in Albania - which is a model for development of heritage-based and ecologically-friendly tourism. Overnight stay in house/dormitory.


Monday-Thursday, 24-27 August - Gjirokastra and Archaeology
Daily 8 hours of archaeological fieldwork at the Illyrian site of Lazarat (Roman period) and laboratory work while staying overnight in Gjirokastra. There may be short excursions in the Drinos River Valley. Overnight stay in house/dormitory.


Friday, 28 August - Travel from Gjirokastra to Tirana

Overnight stay in hotel.


Saturday, 29 August
- Departure Flights
(Note - Dr. Ensor will remain in Albania to attend to the archaeology project and will not fly with the students. However, he will deliver students to the airport for their departures).
