Art in Paris 2007 – Overview of the trip
Paris is one of the world’s most beautiful cities and the inspiration for generations of artists and students. It is a contemporary city yet wears two-thousand years of civilization comfortably. Our 14-day trip will open the doors to this amazing place, giving you a special, personal view into the art, the fascinating culture and amazing past of Paris.
After arriving and orientation, we will begin our visit with the world’s greatest museum – the Louvre, exploring works of major artists such as Michelangelo, DaVinci, Vermeer, Delacroix and Raphael. Since the Louvre is really four museums in one, our visit will include an overview of the museum itself, its great painting collections, its sculpture, architecture and history. It is a place you will want to return to more than once.
Notre Dame is the spiritual center of France. The cathedral draws pilgrims from all over the world. No one can ignore this heroic survivor of the Middle Ages with its soaring buttresses and, awe-inspiring interior, illuminated by its three, immense rose windows.
The Musee d’Orsay holds an exciting collection of art from the 19th century. We will study the works of Van Gogh, Cezanne, Degas, Rodin, Manet, Monet and more. Housed in a former railway station, the Orsay is a beautifully designed space. The Rodin Museum holds a rich collection of the sculptor’s work as well as that of Camille Claudel and others. The Cluny is a jewel of a museum housed in one of Paris’s finest medieval buildings. It has a large collection of art from the Roman period through the middle ages. Paris is a center for modern art as well. The famous Pompidou Museum, with its pipes on the outside, is a huge draw, as is the Musee Picasso.
Paris also has a fascinating underworld. The Abby of St. Denis contains the elegant sculpted tombs of the kings and queens of France. It is also the birthplace of Gothic architecture. We will experience the same effects of light that inspired Abbot Suger when he ordered the great ribbed vaults built eight centuries ago. Venturing across Paris, we will visit a necropolis of the people – Pere Lachaise Cemetery, filled with the graves of the famous and forgotten. The list of “residents” is long but includes Abelard and Heloise, Modigliani, Balzac, Oscar Wilde, Chopin and Jim Morrison. Finally, for those who dare, we will descend underground to visit one of the strangest places in the city, the Catacombs.
Finally, we will take advantage of our central location in Paris to travel to several important places in the surrounding countryside. These include Versailles, once the home of King Louis the XIV, Chartres, two hours away by train, which is considered the most beautiful and best-preserved of Gothic cathedrals. As well as a special trip to Monet’s gardens at Giverny. Much more will be covered as we immerse ourselves in two solid weeks of activity.
While every day will be a new adventure, we will be sure to allow some time for independent, personal exploration and enjoyment of this extraordinary, incredible city.
