China-Tibet Cultural History Tour Health Requirements:
All
program participants receive study abroad health insurance.
For more information about health and safety issues visit Health
and Safety online.
You
must consult with your doctor or health-care provider about the
travel to China and Tibet. According to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC), you should update some routine immunizations
and consider a number of special vaccines. These vaccines and
other health information on East Asia are listed on their website
at: www.cdc.gov/travel/eastasia.htm
You
must consult with your doctor or health-care provider at least
4-6 weeks before the tour in order to allow time for shots to
take effect. You will not be able to participate on the tour unless
you fulfill this requirement.
You must also be aware of the risk of "altitude illness" in Tibet.
Lhasa is at an altitude of 12,500 ft. AMS, acute mountain sickness,
is the most common form of altitude illness and, while it can
occur at altitudes as low as 4,000-6,000ft, most often it occurs
in abrupt ascents to over 9,000ft. The symptoms resemble those
of an alcohol hangover: headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea,
and, occasionally, vomiting. The onset of AMS is delayed, usually
beginning 6-12 hours after arrival at a higher altitude, but occasionally
24 hours after ascent. But there can be more serious forms of
altitude sickness. You should consult you doctor or health-provider
about this illness and read the article from the CDC on "Altitude
Illness." To read the article, click
