Academics
Traditionally, universities in the U.K require students to select a single subject for their major. The Combined Subject Programme allows students to obtain majors in two subjects, a major with a minor or even three minors. The Open Credit Scheme allows for even more flexibility with the combination of courses. The University of Derby offers courses in a wide range of fields, including Art and Design, Business, Education, Humanities, Languages, Performing Arts and Sciences. Students have access to the Learning Centre (library) academic advising, the Career Development Centre and the Centre for Educational Development and Media.
Important Dates:
The academic calendar at the University of Derby is somewhat different from the typical American university calendar. The Autumn Semester at the University of Derby starts in late September and runs through the beginning of January, with exams until mid January*. Christmas break is at approximately the same time as here in the U.S. Spring Semester at Derby (EMU's Winter Semester) runs from late January to mid May with exams continuing into mid June. The Spring Semester also includes Easter vacation, which at the University of Derby is almost two weeks long.
*Exams can be taken early so as to allow EMU students to return for Winter Semester.
