Program Description:

The Film and Italian Culture program is a completely unique approach to university study abroad. It's an ideal learning environment because it integrates experiential learning in the culture with traditional coursework and class sessions to provide a deeper and richer understanding of content. The program has the contextual framework of the Cultural History Tours. Students in the Film and Italian Culture program benefit from lectures and site visits with professors of Art, and History in a unique interdisciplinary learning environment in Rome. Professor Henry Aldridge will teach Film and Italian Culture. Students may enroll in CTAT 379 for three credits. This special low-cost tour is designed expressly for EMU students. Only students enrolled at EMU can participate in this program.

Film and Italian Culture Benefits :

The emphasis is on culture

Our program is designed to involve students in varied cultural experiences in Italy's key cultural center, Rome. Museum visits to the Vatican Collections, and Borghese Galleries, as well as sites such as; the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and St. Peter's Basilica are included in the program fee. The academic emphasis provides a coherent context for site visits and activities.

You get college credit

Students on the program earn 3 credit hours of Eastern Michigan University credit. Students should consult with the EMU study abroad adviser or their academic adviser to assess how this credit will fit into their academic program.

The tour is university sponsored

The Film and Italian Culture program is sponsored by Eastern Michigan University, with a cost far less than a comparable commercial tour. Students pay regular EMU tuition for college credit. Students with financial need may apply their aid to this program, and should visit the Financial Aid Office.

Our staff is top quality

Professor Henry Aldridge was awarded a Teaching Excellence Award from Eastern Michigan University in 2006, and developed the Film and Italian Culture program as a means of introducing his students to the culture and history of Italian film.

We're experienced

During the last 30 years, Academic Programs Abroad staff has conducted over 145-plus successful tours to Western and Eastern Europe, Russia, Israel, Egypt, Mexico and Asia. The tour managers for this program are experienced with the itinerary and sites of Rome. Dr. Henry Aldridge

Dr. Henry Aldridge’s love of travel began one June evening in l963 when he sailed from New York City aboard the SS Maasdam for what was to be the first of many transatlantic voyages. In the summer of 2009, Professor Aldridge completed his fourteenth trip to Europe, six of which have been aboard the legendary ocean liner Queen Elizabeth 2. He has visited Germany, Switzerland, Austria, England, Wales, Scotland, and Italy several times and taught at the University of Reading in England for a term. For the past four years, Professor Aldridge has taken students to Italy as part of a course called Film and Italian Culture that examines the relationship between motion pictures and the cultures they portray.

Dr. Aldridge loves the excitement of travel, whether it be the dramatic moment when the QE2 backs out into the Hudson River or the plane lands on a beautiful sunny morning at the Rome airport. He likes exploring the piazzas and churches of Rome, the museums and galleries of London, and riding the train through the Alps. Dr. Aldridge especially likes the opportunities that study abroad trips provide for him to share his love of film, music, art, and history with students.

Professor Aldridge teaches Film Studies at Eastern Michigan University and is a staff organist at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor. He is a respected film scholar and has published two books and many articles. Dr. Aldridge received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

Assistant Professor Brooke Dagnan teaches Film Studies in the department of Communication, Media & Theatre Arts at Eastern Michigan University. Professor Dagnan began her travels at the early age of fifteen when she euro-railed through Western Europe while visiting an exchange student who had lived in her U.S. home. In a variety of trips, Brooke has visited the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, Croatia, Macedonia, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Puerto Rico. She lived for seven months as an exchange student in Sweden where she attended a specialty arts high school outside of Stockholm.

Professor Dagnan greatly enjoys the exploration and discovery of travel. Some of her favorite parts of travel include visiting art museums and seeing historic art and architecture, further, she loves finding quiet, out-of-the way places to enjoy an espresso or gelato. She loves to explore a place, find the local flavor of neighborhoods and shops, and gather a true sense of the people and their culture. Professor Dagnan is very excited to be co-leading the Film and Italian Culture trip with Professor Henry Aldridge.

Currently, Brooke serves on the Programming Committee for the Ann Arbor Film Festival and is the Director of Film Education at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor. Brooke holds two bachelor’s degrees, one from Oberlin College and a second from Eastern Michigan University; she has an MFA in Film from Ohio University’s School of Film.
