DEPARTURE
July 9
International flight to Rome, Italy. Accepted students will have flight information and advice provided by the Office of Academic Programs Abroad.
ROME
July 10-15
We will go on a walking tour of
ancient ROME and view Trajan's Column, the Colosseum, the Arch
of Constantine, and the Roman Forum. Our history professor will lead us step by step through the ancient world and explain the significance of what we experience. (Below, a view of the Forum Romanum).
The relationship of film to these sites will be discussed by Professor Aldridge. Films viewed on the program will amplify and contextualize our experiences and understanding of Rome's cultural history.

A visit to the Vatican Museum
with its famous sculptures such as the "Laocoön Group" and the
"Apollo Belvedere," will end with the Sistine Chapel, the
jewel of Renaissance art in the heart of the Vatican. Our art professor will guide us through these collections, and illuminate the works of the ancient Mediterranean, the Renaissance and later periods. We will be certain to visit Saint Peter's Basilica-the spiritual center of Roman Catholicism.

Professor Aldridge will arrange viewings of films expressing the cultural self-perceptions of Italians and those of American filmmakers toward Italy and Italians. Discussion sessions will investigate topics in Italian cinema and culture.
We also plan to visit the Villa Borghese set in Rome's beautiful hilltop Borghese Gardens. In the Villa, we'll see a remarkable collection of works by Gianlorenzo Bernini, Caravaggio and Titian. (Below, "Apollo and Daphne" by Bernini).
Before leaving we will stop at the
Trevi Fountain to drop in a coin, which according to tradition
will assure our return to the Eternal City. We will conclude coursework,
say farewell to Rome with a last supper together, and prepare
for our return flight home.
