Program Overview:

All children go through the same stages of development, but social contexts shape children’s development into different configurations. To educate linguistically and culturally diverse (CLD) children, teachers must be sensitive to the similarities and differences among themselves, their students, and their students’ families. This three weeks overseas teaching internship will provide a culturally enriching experience to preservice teachers so that they can be better prepared to teach CLD students.

This program will:

  • Provide a culturally rich experience for special education majors at EMU.
  • Provide a three week experience beginning May 20, 2007 and ending June 9, 2007.
  • Provide EMU students with the opportunity to teach three daily 40-minute sessions at Elementary School in Seoul, Korea.
  • Provide EMU students with a daily one-hour seminar where classroom experiences will be discussed.
  • Permit EMU students to participate in roundtable seminar hosted by Korean preservice teachers in the Teacher Education Program at Dankook University in Seoul, Korea.
  • Provide EMU students with access to two Korean Special Schools (JungMin and YukYoung) where students will observe how special education services are provided to children with disabilities in Korea. Students will reflect on the similarities and differences in special education service delivery system in both countries.
  • Provide EMU students with a supplementary tour focusing on Korean culture.
  • Provide EMU students with housing support as guests in Korean homes so that they can directly experience the Korean culture.

Academics

Through this program, EMU students will experience first hand the instructional strategies and theories used in another area of the world and how children react within the classroom. Students will learn about the organization of the school system and the current educational issues and best practices in Korea, and gain teaching experience during their assigned teaching sessions. Both sets of students, EMU and Korean, will benefit from the experience, and they will also have the opportunity to learn about cultural differences from each other. While staying with Korean host families, EMU students will be able to immerse themselves in a different culture, learn first hand the issues that Korean parents have with their child’s education, and gain a better understanding of multicultural issues. EMU students will have a unique opportunity to learn and to understand more about a different educational system in another cultural context through day trips to other cities, seminars with the professor, observations of Korean special schools, and conversations with Korean preservice teachers from the Teacher Education Program at the University.
