Brief Description of the Proposed Program
EMU students will …
- have the unique opportunity of traveling, studying, teaching, and living abroad in the beautiful countryside of Korea without financial burden.
- receive Korean government scholarships for airfare, lodging, insurance, and living cost.
- teach Korean students in English during day- and/or after-school classes for 3 hours a day in rural Korean elementary schools in need of greater exposure to English.
- be provided with one-on-one working relationships with Korean university student volunteers.
- experience the socio-cultural struggles that culturally and linguistically diverse students may face in the United States and understand the acculturation process of students of different cultures and languages.
- learn about the organization of the Korean school system, current educational issues, and best practices in Korea.
- while staying with Korean host families or the local community, EMU students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a different culture, learn firsthand the issues that Korean parents face with their child’s education, and gain a better understanding of multicultural issues.
- Create greater awareness and understanding of a different educational system within its cultural context through day trips to other cities, seminars with the local school systems, observations of Korean schools, and conversations with Korean preservice teachers from the teacher education program at the local university.
