Querétaro
Querétaro is located about two and a half
hours north of Mexico City, in a region called the Bajío.
It is near San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato, two major tourist
attractions. Nevertheless, Querétaro is a provincial capital
not frequented by foreign tourists, making it ideal for a Spanish
language immersion program. Founded in 1531, it has been the capital
of the country twice, in 1847 and again in 1916. It was in Querétaro
that the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed, whereby Mexico
lost half of its territory to the United States. The climate of
the area is warm and dry; however it may get cool on summer evenings.
The regional cuisine consists mainly of meat dishes, although restaurants
offering all kinds of cuisine may be found in the city. Querétaro
also offers a wide variety of entertainment including the International
Cervantes Festival. Visitors in the summer may enjoy performances
at the University Theatre and at the Corral de Comedias. Several
important festivals, including the festival of Santa Ana (July 26)
occur during the summer in Querétaro.

Tentative Itinerary
This
program will begin in Mexico City where participants will visit
the Museo de Antropología, (Museum of Anthropology), the
Templo Mayor, Tlatelolco, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Palacio
de Bellas Artes and the Castle of Chapultepec. There will also be
a field trip to the Pre-Columbian city of Teotihuacan, north of
Mexico City. The program will also include visits to Puebla and
Oaxaca as well as to other significant cultural and historical sites.
