Munich and Prague

Charles Bridge, Prague

History and Art in Prague and Munich

Winter Break

February 22-March 2, 2008

Program:
Earn 3 credits in History or 3 credits in Art on this Winter Break tour. Travel with Gordon Knutson and Jay Yager while studying European history and fine arts in Prague, The Czech Republic and Munich, Germany.

In historic PRAGUE we will visit the Old City with its famous square dominated by the Old Town Hall and the astronomical clock. We'll see the Jan Huss Monument and the Tyn Church, once a center of the Hussite movement. Then we will explore the Jewish Quarter, the oldest Jewish settlement in Central Europe, with its 700 year old Synagogue. We will also visit the magnificent Charles Bridge, named after one of the Czech's most important rulers, with its wonderful view of the Prague Castle.

At the Prazsky Hrad, Prague's castle, we will see the St. Vitus' Cathedral, with its tombs of the most important Czech rulers; the Old Royal Palace, site of the "defenestration of Prague;" and the Golden Lane where Franz Kafka lived for a short time. At the Castle our art professor will guide us through the Art Museum at the Sternberg Palace.

We will also explore the Communist period of Czech history visiting the Museum of Communism and Vaclavske Namesti, one of the sites of Velvet Revolution of Vaclav Havel. Evenings will be spent attending musical events or at leisure. There will also be time to review our experiences and to catch up on course assignments. We will leave for MUNICH by train.

MUNICH, the capital of Bavaria, is a cultural center of Germany. Our art professor will take us on a tour of the Alte Pinakothek, famous for works by Dürer, Rubens, Rembrandt, and its large collection of Dutch, French and Italian masters. We will also visit the Neue Pinakothek with works by 18th and 19th century artists and the German Expressionists; the State Gallery of Modern Art with works by Courbet, Cezanne, Gauguin, and Van Gogh; and the Glyptothek with its fine collection of classical sculptures.

Meanwhile, our historian will take us on a walking tour of sites from the Munich Beer Hall Putsch, Hitler's first attempt to take power; and to Dachau on the outskirts of Munich, to visit the concentration camp which was established there by Nazi Germany. Students will also have time to visit optional sites such as the Nymphenburg Palace, the summer palace of the kings of Bavaria; the Residence, their palace in the city; the Olympic Park, site of the massacre of the 1972 Olympics, or the Deutsches Museum or science and technology. Evenings will be spent attending musical events or at leisure. Of course, we will preserve time for a final review, to finish course work, and to prepare for the return home.

Students must take 3 credits in history or art. All students will attend most history sites and art museums.
