About the program:

Eastern Michigan University students may attend the University of Groningen for one or two semesters for a cost equivalent to the costs at Eastern Michigan University. Students pay for EMU tuition and fees, plus a modest program fee. The courses taken at Groningen appear on the EMU transcript as EMU courses. Students may select courses to count towards a major, minor, General Education or elective credit.

The University of Groningen:

The University of Groningen, founded in 1614, has about 20,000 students. The University offers more that fifty different fields of study; no other university in The Netherlands offers so extensive a range of subjects.

For international students, the Faculty of Arts offers a Dutch Series program with courses taught in English. Courses offered include Dutch language, culture, literature, history and art history from a European perspective. All courses are taught by specialists in their respective fields. Some regular university classes are also taught in English: for example, the School of Law offers such courses as International Relations, Political Science and International Law.

Students in past semesters have enrolled in such courses as:

  • Dutch Society and Way of Life
  • European Unification: Reality or Myth?
  • The Rise of the Nation State: Theories and Realities
  • Dutch Art History and Architecture in the Golden Age
  • Intensive Dutch Literature
  • Literature and the Arts from 1870 to the Present
  • International Environmental Law
  • War and Peace

Groningen

Groningen is a cultural and commercial center in the northern region of The Netherlands (Holland). This city of over 170,000 people was founded over 950 years ago. Just two and a half hours by train from Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and about three hours by train from Hamburg, Germany, Groningen is a center of culture, education and science. The city has several theatres, museums, art galleries and bookshops, specializing in all European languages. Groningen is a University city: the presence of its faculty and students can be felt in all aspects of city life. This gives the city a special and particularly youthful character.

The surrounding countryside offers many sights within easy reach: woods and meadows to the south, the Frisian lakes (for sailing and surfing) to the west, the sea, the islands and dunes of the Wadden tidal flats, and the unique wetlands to the north.

Daily Life in Groningen

Students live in a residence hall with other students from around the world. For students who like to cook, kitchen facilities are excellent, and the local market is a great place to shop for fresh vegetables, fruit, bread and local specialities. Those who prefer to eat out will find numerous options: the inexpensive University Mensa (student cafeteria), nearby cafes, or a wide range of restaurants such as; Mexican, Greek, Indian or Italian, to name just a few. The city of Groningen is known for its lively nightlife. Students can visit a variety of clubs, many with live music and dancing.

Costs and Financial Aid

The cost of attending the University of Groningen is equivalent to the cost of a semester at Eastern Michigan University! Students pay for EMU tuition and fees, plus a modest program fee. Once they arrive in Groningen, students pay for housing and meals. The cost of living in Groningen is comparable to that in Ypsilanti. Additional costs include airfare and personal expenses. Students may apply ALL financial aid awards toward the program, including scholarships, grants, and loans.
