The University has a very active Student Union, which
hosts regular events such as live music acts, film nights,
comedy acts and dance parties. The Student Union also
runs a newspaper and has many affiliated student clubs
and societies. In addition, all three Oxford Brookes campuses
have sports facilities available to students for a small
charge.
Campuses
Most classes take place in the main campus, the Gipsy
Lane campus, which is 15 minutes by bus from downtown
Oxford. Business and computer science classes are primarily
taught at the Wheatley campus (30 minutes from Oxford
and 15 minutes from the main campus), and Education majors
spend most of their time at the Harcourt Hill campus (20
minutes from Oxford and 30 minutes from the main Campus).
There is a regular bus service, free for students with
ID, between the campuses.
Halls
of Residence Exchange students at Oxford Brookes University
are housed in one of the University Halls of Residence.
Priority is given to international students who apply
by the deadline. There are other accommodation choices
available, but the halls provide the best way to meet
other students and avoid utility bills. The University
has eight halls of residence with a total of around 2,500
rooms. Each hall has its pros and cons. Some are closer
to the main campus; some have larger rooms than others;
some have more activities, and others are quieter.
Daily
Life Oxford is an historic town with some of the most
beautiful and unique architecture in the world, but it
also has a lively student scene and is especially well
known for its music, museums and bookstores. The main
downtown street has been pedestrianized (no cars allowed,
except for delivery vehicles), which makes it very pleasant
for walking. The Covered Market and many parks are other
inviting places to explore, and the area of Headington
where the main Oxford Brookes campus is located is well
served by shops, restaurants and bed & breakfast inns.
Oxford is also a prime location for traveling throughout
England. Located in south central England, Oxford has
excellent connections to other parts of the country by
bus and train. Inexpensive express coaches run between
Oxford and London 24 hours a day and Paris or Brussels
are just five hours away via Eurostar (a train that runs
through The Chunnel, the tunnel connecting England to
France).
