Shakespeare
in London
July 12 July 25, 2010
Program Overview:
Earn three credits in Literature 210 Introduction to Shakespeare (fulfills EMU General Education Humanities Requirement, and for Honors credit), or Literature 405 Shakespeare (fulfills Major Author requirement for EMU for English Majors), or graduate credits in Literature 592 Special Topics on this summer tour. You will stay in central London, England (and two days in Stratford). This class is designed as an intensive study-abroad seminar for anyone who likes Shakespeare and Theater, English majors, and for students who plan to teach his plays.
Class will be a touring discussion group on scene at London museums, libraries and theaters. There will be a visit to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, a day in Stratford, backstage tours of Shakespearean performances, and attendance at live productions in the theatre capital of the world. You’ll read some of Shakespeare’s plays in the context of the latest theories about his life as an urban playwright, then visit several of London's famous museums, including the British Library, and view collections on the print and stage history of his famous works.
For teachers, the course will offer an opportunity to collect teaching materials for classrooms: facsimile pages of quarto and folio editions of the plays, pictures of sites and events, reproductions of paintings that depict early modern life, maps of early modern Stratford and London, and old playbills.
