Summer European Cultural History Tour

COST

London to Istanbul
12 credit hours
Length: 70 days
Program Fee $ 8,998* (non-EMU students)
Program Fee: $7,998* (currently enrolled EMU students*) *This cost for currently enrolled EMU students reflects a $1,000 Academic Programs Abroad Award applied directly to the program fee.

*Our program fees do not include tuition and airfare (see lower on this cost page for more information) and are based on currency exchange rates in effect at the time of budget planning. Further weakening of the U.S. Dollar against world currencies may require a surcharge to cover unexpected costs resulting from unfavorable exchange rates. We will do everything possible to limit program costs as we monitor economic conditions beyond our control.

The Program Fee includes:

  1. All air, rail, ferry and bus transportation between cities.
  2. Field trips and excursions by train, chartered bus, or boat.
  3. Tickets to all musical events and theater productions arranged by the program.
  4. Entrance tickets to museums visited by the program.
  5. International Student Identity Card.
  6. CMI Insurance
  7. Room based on multiple occupancy.
  8. Couchettes when possible on overnight trains.
  9. Breakfasts (mostly continental).
  10. Hotel service charges and local taxes.
Items not included:
  1. Tuition for 12 undergraduate credit hours.*
  2. Air transportation from the U.S. to Europe and return.
  3. Most meals other than breakfasts.
  4. Street car, bus or subway fares within cities ie: to/from airport, concerts, museums, etc.
  5. Passports, textbooks, laundry, independent travel and expenses of a purely personal nature.
* Tuition

Estimated Costs Above the Program Fee

Frequently students ask us how much money they will need above the Program Fee of the tour. Based on estimates made by students on previous tours, the extra expenditures, in addition to round-trip airfare and tuition should amount to:

Summer European Cultural History Tour
Meals (based on $25 per day average for two meals-some students may spend more or less) 1750
Street Cars/Subways (based on average for entire tour) 225
Laundry (based on $10 per load, min. one load every week) 100
Textbooks (based on average for four classes) 150
Miscellaneous (bottled water, snacks, toiletries, internet, bank exchange fees, public restroom use charges, etc.) 375
Totals $ 2,600

The estimated costs above the program fee are based on previous participant's average expenses reflecting a conservative budget and do not include the purchase of beverages or gifts and souvenirs, nor do they take into account the life-style of the individual student, nor changes in foreign currency exchange rates.

All program students pay in-State EMU tuition and fees, at the rate posted by the Regents of the University. Tuition and fees are billed separately from the program cost. Students on the Summer European Cultural History Tour will receive separate tuition bills for six credit hours on the Western European portion of the program and six credit hours on the Mediterranean portion of the program . Please click tuition link to calculate costs for the twelve in-State undergraduate credits. For more billing information, view program application instructions.

Refunds
No refunds will be made for meals, accommodations, cultural events or other regularly scheduled activities missed by tour participants.

Financial aid for EMU Students:

Eastern Michigan University students who qualify for financial aid may apply it to this program. Appropriate arrangements must be made with the Office of Financial Aid, 403 Pierce Hall. Thanks to financial aid, study abroad is affordable for almost all students, provided that you meet all the eligibility requirements. You can take advantage of a wide array of state, Federal, EMU institutional and private sources of aid. The entire cost of a program, including transportation to and from the program site, tuition, fees and living expenses, is taken into account when financial need is determined. This means that your award will be adjusted according to the actual cost of the study abroad program. The types of aid available to you will vary. Visit the EMU Financial Aid Website   for an overview.

The APA Program Award and the Emanuel Fenz Cultural History Tour Scholarship for EMU Students:

All currently enrolled EMU students accepted into the SUMECHT programs receive an APA financial award directly applicable to the program fee. The posted EMU student fee reflects the APA financial award of $1,000 reduction to the program fee.

The Cultural History Tours were developed by EMU's Dr. Emanuel G. Fenz more than 28 years ago. A scholarship in memory of Dr. Fenz's achievement in education has been made available to provide financial assistance to qualified EMU students participating in a Cultural History Tour program.

Visit the Online Fenz Scholarship page. Students may also get forms from the Office of Academic Programs Abroad, 103 Boone Hall.

Financial aid for non-EMU Students:

Students from other colleges and universities should apply through their own Financial Aid Office for assistance. Students who do not normally qualify for financial aid at their home institutions or who need additional funds beyond their normal financial aid allocation may consider arranging a loan through the Higher Education Authority loan program of their home state. Programs of this kind enable students to obtain loans at a low interest rate through private banks or through the student's state of residence. Information regarding these programs can be obtained from the financial aid office of the student's home institution. Be sure to have your Financial Aid Officer coordinate any consortium agreements or financial aid you receive with EMU's Financial Aid Office.
