Academics:
Pompeii
and Herculaneum were destroyed by a massive volcanic eruption
of Mt. Vesuvius on August 24, 79 A.D. Both towns were devastated,
but more than 2000 years later, a rich historical record reveals
intricate and fascinating details about how technology shaped
public and private life.
This
interdisciplinary course will explore the relationship between
culture and technology connected to transportation, industry,
water and power, architecture and domestic technologies. The social
impact of technological systems on politics, commerce, spirituality,
family life, and leisure will enable us to follow the fascinating
momentum which reveals that regardless of time and place technology
is not just a constraint on culture, it is itself part of culture
(Rybczynski 221).
