World Scholar Stories

Now that you have returned from your study abroad program, take a moment to reflect. Once you've gathered your thoughts, send them to us! We love to hear your stories!

Academic Programs Abroad wants to hear about your study abroad experience. Your story can be told in many forms: a poem, a journal entry, E-mails to home from abroad, letters, or a meditation on your experiences overseas. The Office of Academic Programs Abroad will share your story with prospective participants and others to help educate our EMU community. Your work may be published on the Academic Programs Abroad Website, or may be submitted to other publications. This is your opportunity to share your experiences and make a difference!

Here is a list of questions that you should consider in writing your story:

Bernini Fountain, Rome

1. How did you hear about your study abroad program?
2. Why did you study abroad and how did you choose your particular program?
3. Please describe your study abroad experience.
(If you had one memory from your time abroad, what would it be and why?)
4. Describe the teaching and learning experiences on your program and how they differ from learning on campus at EMU.
5. Education encompasses a variety of things from academic learning to experiences that help you grow emotionally as a person. How did studying abroad advance your education? Do you plan to travel abroad or study abroad again?
6. What was the biggest challenge for you to overcome upon living in a new environment?
7. Cuisine can be quite different across the globe! What was your most memorable
experience with the local food?
8. Please describe your interactions and experiences with the local people.
9. a) In the current evolving world would you say that studying abroad is important?
b) Did studying abroad influence or change this opinion?
c) How did studying abroad change your views of your home country ?
10. Upon returning home, what was the hardest thing to adjust to?
11. In general what advice would you offer future students who want to study abroad?
(What is one thing you would like to tell future participants about your program?)

Now that you have read the list of questions, decide how you would like to submit your story. (Be sure to include a photo too!)

You could do it all online! As long as you're here, why not just do it now? Or, you could pasteyour story into an E-mail to: programs.abroad@emich.edu. You could drop it off at our offices at 103 Boone Hall, or you could call and set up an appointment to be interviewed! Yes, we'll even do the typing! All stories submitted to Academic Programs Abroad may be used to help publicize and promote study abroad.
