Wednesday Briefing for June 7

The Provost's Wednesday Briefing is a complement to the Provost's Update and intended to be a quick update on achievements and opportunities in Academic and Student Affairs. In the summer, it will only be distributed when content is available. Please forward any comments or submissions to emuprovost@emich.edu .

More Kudos!

  • To Dr. Raul Leon, who received the Outstanding Men's Program Award from ACPA - College Student Educators International, on behalf of the Coalition on Men and Masculinities.
  • To all who participated on behalf of EMU in the National Science Foundation's Higher Education Research and Development Survey, in particular Katharyn Schortgen, who provided the response.
  • To EMU's Chapter of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), formally recognized as a Gold Star chapter for the 2016–2017 academic year. The Chapter implemented highly engaging events throughout the year, demonstrating its integrity and dedication to NSCS's values of scholarship, leadership, and service.

Congratulations and many thanks to all of you for the distinction you bring to EMU through your dedication.

Change to EMU Human Subjects Review Process

As of June 10, the EMU Human Subjects Review Committee will no longer accept human subject applications on IRBNet. After June 10, all human subject applications, along with the supplementary documents, must be emailed to human.subjects@emich.edu for review.

The Human Subjects Review Committee is switching research support systems, from IRBNet to Cayuse IRB. Cayuse IRB offers more functionality, including a fully online application, and will take time to implement. The anticipated implementation date is August 1, and the campus will be notified when the date is finalized. In the interim, all human subject submissions must be sent to human.subjects@emich.edu. Access to IRBNet will end on June 20, 2017.

Please contact Sonia Chawla or April Gravitt at human.subjects@emich.edu with any questions.

"Mathaletes" from 19 schools participated in a series of competitions where they answered grade-level questions ranging from addition facts to multi-step equations. Mlive posted an article and EMU issued a press release on the event.

Pease Commuter Lot Closed Friday, June 9

The Physical Plant will be conducting repairs to the entry and exit of the Pease Commuter Lot, which will require the closure of that portion of the lot beginning Friday, June 9. Ongoing Updates

STEM Education Activities Planning Opportunity — June 20

EMU and the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum (AAHOM) have received funding from the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement in order to form a partnership which provides quality informal STEM education activities to the children and families of Ypsilanti. Interested faculty from all disciplines are encouraged to help make the most of this opportunity by participating in a joint planning session with educators from the AAHOM on Tuesday June 20 from 2–4 p.m. (campus location TBA).

The initiative is lead by Sarah Fabian and Kelly Grossman (Library) and Amy Flanagan Johnson (Chemistry). Please RSVP by noon on Friday June 16, though earlier responses for planning purposes are greatly appreciated. Snacks will be provided.

Classroom Technology

TEL Systems, working with Information Technology and Physical Plant, continue installation of upgraded classroom technology, including document cameras, Blu-ray players, thin-client workstations and projection equipment. Over the next couple of weeks, they are targeting classrooms in Sherzer and Quirk.

Traffic Flow Direction Reversal on West Circle Drive May 1–July 10
