Financial Assistance for International Students

Several options are available to help you finance your graduate studies at Eastern Michigan University:

Assistance from the EMU Office of Financial Aid upon admission

  • The National Scholars Program (NSP) Scholarship - Renewable award which pays the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition (approximately $6,240 per year for two years). Open to incoming graduate students with a 3.6 or higher GPA on a 4.0 scale from the equivalent of a US bachelor’s degree.

  • The EMU Student Success Scholarship - $6,200 total award ($3,100 per year for a total of two years). Open to incoming graduate students with a 3.2 or higher GPA on a 4.0 scale from the equivalent of a US bachelor's degree.

Note: Students are automatically considered for either the NSP or the Student Success scholarship at the time of admission based on the GPA used to make their admission decision. Students who are awarded the NSP are not eligible for the Student Success scholarship.

Assistance from the EMU Graduate School

  • Assistantships - Tuition and stipend awards, open to any graduate student admitted to a degree program. General info and Answers to FAQ
  • University Fellowships - $500 to $4,000 award, open to new graduate students who had a 3.6 or higher undergraduate GPA, and to returning graduate students who have a 3.8 or higher EMU GPA. (GPA requirements reflect a 4.0 scale)
  • Barton Scholarship - $4,000 award, open to graduate degree students who previously completed their baccalaureate from EMU with a 3.5 or higher GPA.

To apply for assistantships, fellowships, or the Barton Scholarship, complete the Graduate School Financial Assistance Form.

Due to federal and EMU regulations, students admitted as non-degree, continuing education, condition four, H-1 and H-4 visa holders, and some other visa holders are not eligible for the above assistance.
