Student role definitions
The following definitions are provided to help you in applying to EMU. Our staff is also happy to provide guidance to you by phone regarding which application type is right for you. Submitting an online application requires a non-refundable application processing fee payment. If you have previously applied to EMU, you may not be required to complete an application at this time - consult our guidelines on re-enrolling before applying. If you have questions regarding any portion of the application or enrollment processes, please contact our office before submitting this non-refundable payment.
Undergraduate students - students who have not yet earned a bachelor's degree
First-year students
- Our most common student role, for high school seniors, high school graduates, and students who have completed the GED. To use this application, you must have not taken any college classes since completing high school. DO use this application if you are a high school senior seeking traditional admission.

Transfer student
- A student who has or is currently enrolled at another university as an undergraduate student, has not completed a bachelor's degree, and has never attended EMU as an undegraduate student.

International student
- Non-U.S. citizens, including Permanent Residents.

Undergraduate Guest student
- An undergraduate student who is currently enrolled in a degree program at another university, who would like to take a class at EMU as a guest student and then transfer the credit back to his/her home institution.

Dual-enrolled students
- High school students who want to earn college credit while still in high school. Do NOT use this application type if you are a high school senior seeking traditional admission. DO use this application type if you want to earn college credit before you graduate from high school, you have reached junior status, and you have a cumulative grade point average of a 3.00 or higher

Post-Bachelor's students
Post-bachelor's teacher preparation student
- A student who has completed a bachelor's degree, does not have teaching certificate, and who would like to earn a first teaching certificate (provisional). The student must have successfully completed the Michigan Basic Skills Test prior to the semester for which he/she is applying. In addition, applicants must have earned a 2.5 undergraduate GPA for admission. Students whose undergraduate GPA was below 2.5 must apply to EMU as a second bachelor's student.

Undergraduate non-degree (self-improvement) student
- A student who has completed a bachelor's degree with an undergraduate GPA of 2.0-2.49 and would like to take additional undergraduate classes. This application type is common for students who need to take additional undergraduate classes in preparation for admission to a graduate program, second bachelor's program or teacher preparation program. Non-degree students whose undergraduate GPA was 2.5 or higher should apply as graduate non-degree students.

Second bachelor's degree student
- A student who has completed a bachelor's degree and is seeking an additional bachelor's degree. This application type also applies to students who would like to earn a first teaching certificate (provisional) and have an undergraduate GPA below 2.5.

Post-bachelor's certificate student - Music Therapy or African Studies
- A student who has completed a bachelor's degree and is seeking an undergraduate-level post-bachelor's certificate. Currently, EMU offers two such certificates, in music therapy and African studies.

Graduate students - students who have completed a bachelor's degree and/or teaching certificate
Graduate degree or certificate student
- A student who has completed his/her undergraduate bachelor's degree and would like to apply to a master's, specialist or doctoral degree program, or a graduate certificate program. This application type includes certified teachers who are seeking to renew their certification or add an endorsement to their certification.

Graduate non-degree (self-improvement) student
- A student who has completed his undergraduate bachelor's degree with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and who wants to take an undergraduate or graduate level class or classes without being admitted to a degree program.

Graduate Guest student
- An graduate student who is currently enrolled in a degree program at another university who would like to take a class at EMU as a guest student and has received confirmation from his or her home institution that the credit will be applicable to the student's degree program.

Undergraduate and Graduate Re-enrollment Options
If you previously applied to EMU, but never earned credit as an EMU student, you must submit an Undergraduate Application Update Form or a Graduate Enrollment Change Form. You should NOT apply for admission at this time.
If you earned credit as an EMU student within the past two years and would like to continue the same degree program, log in to your my.emich account and register for classes. You should NOT apply for admission at this time.
If you attended EMU as an undergraduate student more than two years ago, have not yet completed a bachelor's degree, and want to continue to take classes at EMU, you must re-enroll and should NOT apply for admission at this time.
If you attended EMU as a graduate student more than two years ago, did not complete the degree program, and want to resume the same program, you must submit a Graduate Enrollment Change Form and should NOT apply for admission at this time.
If you started a graduate program, did not complete the degree program, and want to gain admission to a different degree program, you must submit a Graduate Enrollment Change Form and should NOT apply for admission at this time.
If you have completed an EMU degree and want to gain admission to a new degree program, you must re-apply, using the application type indicated above
