First-Year Students
First Year FAQ
What are the application requirements for new undergraduate students?
You must submit an undergraduate application and application fee as well as official transcripts in sealed envelopes from every institution you have attended. If you are in high school, this means your high school transcripts. You also need to submit official test ACT or SAT test scores (if you are under 21 years of age). These will be sent by the testing agency if you list EMU on the test when you take it.
Is it possible to get my application fee waived?
Students with high economic need may qualify for a fee waiver. In order to have the your admissions application fee waived, you may have a high school counselor or social worker write a letter on their school or agency letterhead asking that the fee be waived due to your economic situation. Students who use a fee waiver cannot submit an online application, as the online application requires a credit card payment to submit the application. Here is a link to the paper application that you can print.
How long will it take to get an admission decision from EMU?
Is there a faster way to get admitted?
If you are able to get official transcripts in sealed envelopes from every institution you have attended, you can make an appointment for an on-site admission decision. On-site admissions allow you to meet with an admissions counselor who will review your transcripts and make an admission decision the same day. On-site admissions are always a part of our Explore Eastern program. Call 1-800-GO-TO-EMU to schedule and on-site admission appointment.
What criteria does EMU use to make admission decisions?
Admission decisions are made based on the combination of your cumulative grade point average, and your ACT or SAT test score. The rigorousness of your high school curriculum and your other involvements are often also considered. Eastern uses a sliding scale, so that the higher your grades are, the lower your test score can be. The pattern of your grades is also considered. Your most recent grades and those in your most rigorous classes are the most important. To inquire about your eligibility for admission, send an e-mail to one of our advisers.
Is campus safe?
At Eastern Michigan University, there are many things that are done to ensure the safety of our students. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) consists of EMU police officers on campus. We also have a walking escort service called SEEUS (Student Eyes and Ears for University Safety). This service works from 6:00 pm until 1 a.m. Sunday through Friday.
