Transferring Credit
Following are some general rules for transferring credit to EMU. Contact a transfer adviser to determine transfer credits for your specific situation.
- EMU accepts transfer credit from institutions regionally accredited by one of the following accrediting organizations:
- Middle States Association of Colleges & Schools
- Northwest Commission of Colleges & Universities
- North Central Association of Colleges & Schools
- New England Association of Colleges & Schools
- Southern Association of Colleges & Schools
- Western Association of Colleges & Schools
- The course must be a college level (100 or higher) course.
- You must have earned a "C" or better grade in any course for it to transfer.
- You will be awarded the number of credit hours the course awarded when you took it (i.e. If you transfer a 3-credit composition course at another college, you will receive 3 credits, even though the course may be equivalent to a 2-credit-hour course at EMU.)
- Grades earned at another school do not transfer to EMU.
- Neither transfer grades nor transfer credit hours are used to calculate your EMU grade point average (GPA).
- An unlimited number of transfer credits will be considered for EMU credit from any accredited college or university where the student earned a grade of 2.0 (“C”) or better. You must, however, complete the degree requirements for your program at EMU in order to receive your degree from EMU. See rules 9 and 10 below for details.
- Questions regarding assignment of general education credit are directed to the Academic Advising Center.
- Questions regarding departmental credit are directed to the specific academic department.
- Transfer students must earn a minimum of 60 semester hours from a four-year school, credit by examination or military credit (i.e. the majority of work cannot be from a community college).
- Transfer students must earn at least 60 non-community college credits, and 30 must be from EMU to be eligible to receive an EMU degree. The remaining 30 can be from other 4-year-colleges or universities, Advanced Placement, military credit or CLEP credit.
Specific Subject Course Credit Is Awarded
If the University has already evaluated the course and determined that it is directly equivalent to an EMU course, you will be awarded specific course credit (i.e. English 111 at Washtenaw Community College is awarded credit for English 121 at EMU.) Direct equivalencies will apply as if the course had been taken at EMU.
Subject Area Credit May Be Awarded with no Specific Course Credit Assigned
Some courses are not directly equivalent to an EMU course, but clearly are college level and subject specific. A course such as The History of the Vietnam War might be awarded general history credit. This will show up on the student record as HIST 000.
Some Credit Must Be Evaluated by the Academic Department to Determine What Credit, If Any, Will be Awarded
If Transfer Services is unable to evaluate the transferability of the coursework, the student may be required to meet with the academic department. The student's tabulation of credit may indicate a subject area and 000, AACR GEN (both indicating elective credit), or possibly NOCR (indicating that no transfer credit was awarded.) In some cases, the course has not been evaluated by the appropriate department, or the courses are performance-related, such as in music, art or theatre.
Use the transfer equivalency tables to see how your credit will transfer.
General Education Credit Is Awarded
Courses that are not evaluated as being directly equivalent to a specific course at EMU, but do meet criteria for general education or basic studies are awarded general education credit in the appropriate subject area. This means the credit meets a specific general education requirement. On the student’s academic record, there will be a subject area followed by BAS (e.g. LITR BAS satisfies the general education literature credit) or BASX (e.g. HIST BASX satisfies the general education cross-cultural requirement).
