Undergraduate transfer students
Transfer FAQ
What are the admission requirements for transfer students?
You must submit an undergraduate transfer application and application fee as well as official transcripts in sealed envelopes for every institution you have attended. The minimum transfer requirement is an overall grade point average of a 2.0 and 12 college-level transferable credits. Students must have received a C or better for specific credits to transfer.
What is meant by "transferable" credits?
Transferable means credits that will be accepted at EMU. A course must be college level to be transferable, and you must have earned a C or better grade. To check which courses will transfer, visit our course equivalency page.
How many credits may I transfer to EMU?
There is no a limit to the number of credits you transfer to EMU. However, you must complete 60 non-community-college credits. At least 30 must be EMU credits to graduate from EMU. The others can be from other four year colleges or universities, advanced placement credit, CLEP credit, or military credit.
If I know the program I want to study when I transfer to EMU, can I begin that program at the community college?
Many students start their degree programs at the community college and transfer to EMU using the community college transfer guides. In some cases, there is even a formal agreement between EMU and a community college that spells out exactly the plan of study a student will pursue in a program at both schools. These are called articulation agreements.
I plan to start at a community college. I know I want to transfer to a four-year college or university. However, I am not sure which university or what academic program I am going to pursue. What should I do?
Even if you are uncertain about your degree program and future college or university, you can make progress on the education for your future career at your local community college. Most community colleges have career or counseling centers with resources to help student identify the subject areas and career fields that interest the student. While you are working on this decision, taking courses that satisfy "MACRAO" will help you make progress that will count ultimately toward your bachelor's degree.
What is the "MACRAO" agreement and what does it mean to "satisfy MACRAO?"
MACRAO is an agreement between many 2-year and 4-year colleges and universities that belong to the Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars and Officers, (MACRAO). The purpose of this agreement is to ensure that students who complete a specified plan of general education courses at a community college will have satisfied the general education requirements at any four-year college that signed the MACRAO agreement.
Eastern Michigan University accepts the MACRAO agreement with the following provisions: Students who have been certified by a signatory community college as having satisfied the general education requirements of the MACRAO Agreement in each required course, will be required to fulfill only the four additional courses now a part of Eastern Michigan University’s general education requirements:
- an advanced writing or speaking course or a foreign language composition course;
- a mathematical reasoning course (unless waived by an ACT math sub-score scores of 23 or SAT math sub-score of 580);
- a computer literacy course; and
- a cross-cultural/international studies course, all from the approved list.
This agreement applies only to general education and does not exempt the community college students from meeting all curriculum and graduation requirements.
How long will it take to get an admission decision from EMU?
Once we have received all required documents, we will process your application, review your admissions file and make a decision in two to three weeks. After that, we will send you a letter notifying you of the decision. The longest part of the process is usually the time it takes for us to recieve your official transcripts and have them added to our computer system. Typically, this takes about three weeks.
Is there a faster way to get admitted?
If you are able to get official transcripts in sealed envelopes from every institution you have attended, you can make an appointment for an on-site admission decision. On-site admissions allow you to meet with an admissions counselor who will review your transcripts and make an admission decision in the same day. Once you have received your decision, you can schedule an appointment for advising at a later date. Your transfer credit will be evaluated for EMU equivalencies before your advising appointment.
Can I find out if EMU will accept my credit toward a program of study so I can determine how long it will take me to graduate from EMU in my program?
Transfer Services in the Admissions Office at EMU can review your unofficial transcripts for transfer equivalencies to the university in general and those that will meet the general education requirements. Credit for specific academic program requirements must be determined by the academic departments.
Transfer Services can help you set up an appointment with a faculty member in the department of the degree program you wish to pursue to have your credits evaluated. If you are FAXing a transcript to Transfer Services, be sure to include a page with your transcript asking them to evaluate your credit and indicating the degree program you wish to pursue at EMU.
