50th Annual Alumni Awards Dinner

The Office for Alumni Relations is currently accepting your nominations for outstanding EMU alumni and friends to be honored at the 50th Annual Alumni Awards presented Saturday, May 7, 2011 at the Ypsilanti Marriott at Eagle Crest. Save the date for the Alumni Association's showcase event!

2010 honorees

Alumni Achievement Awards

Leon Stanley Clark, Jr. (’95) - Clark was a vice president with Prestige Automotive Group and helped it secure a Mercedes-Benz dealership. His award will be presented posthumously.

Molly Luempert-Coy (’91, ’92) - Luempert-Coy is a civic-minded regional relations manager for DTE Energy who has been honored by that company for customer service.

Dara T. Munson (’96) - Munson, president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit, focuses on the needs of at-risk children professionally as well as through her volunteer activities.

Distinguished Alumni Awards


George L. Cogar, Ph.D. (’74, ’77) - Cogar is a psychologist and private investor who recommended a special Veterans Administration program to treat female Vietnam veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Robert Skandalaris (’76) - Skandalaris is chairman and founder of Quantum Ventures, a corporate development firm and investor, and founding sponsor of the Blessing Basket project, which works to reduce poverty in developing countries.

Maureen E. Thomas, Esq. (’81) - Thomas is a senior executive consultant in legal and risk management operations for Building Materials Holding Corporation, an emeritus director of Habitat for Humanity-Detroit, and chair of the EMU Foundation Board of Trustees.

Dr. John W. Porter Distinguished Service Award


Ralph R. Pasola (’71, ’77, ’86) - Pasola began volunteering at the university under Porter and kept on going, earning accolades from multiple departments on campus.

Laurence N. Smith (’99H) - Smith is emeritus vice president, University Marketing and Student Affairs, and an emeritus member of the EMU Foundation Board of Trustees. He co-authored “Eastern Michigan University: A Sesquicentennial Portrait.”

General Criteria

Outstanding Young Alumnus/Alumna Award

This award is presented to alumni whose achievements have been signified personal honors bestowed upon them by their peers and who have demonstrated the worth of their education through their post-college achievements. Generally, recipients have been graduates of EMU for less than 10 years.

Alumnus/Alumna Achievement Award

This award is presented to alumni who have achieved distinction in their chosen fields, clearly demonstrated the value of their college education, and maintained a continuing interest in Eastern Michigan University. Generally, recipients have been graduates of EMU for 10-25 years.

Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna Award

This award is presented to alumni who have achieved extraordinary distinction in their chosen field, demonstrated exceptional service to others, and maintained a continuing interest in Eastern Michigan University. Generally, recipients have been graduates of EMU for more than 25 years.
> Distinguished Alumnus/Alumna Award recipients

Dr. John W. Porter Distinguished Service Award

This award is presented to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to Eastern Michigan University or the Alumni Association of EMU. Recipients need not be graduates of Eastern Michigan University.
