Frownfelter

Names: Rick and Ruth (Hartwig) Frownfelter

Relationship Status: Married

Anniversary Date: May 25th, 1980

Do you have children? Yes. David is 23 and a 2009 graduate of ITT Tech; Andrea is 22 and a 2010 EMU grad.

How did you meet? I was working as a student I/O clerk at EMU's University Computing when Rick started working there as supervisor.

Where was your first date? We started out going places together with friends and co-workers, which gradually evolved into dating, so I can't really pinpoint our first date. Later on we enjoyed eating out at the Old China restaurant on Cross Street.

Any cute memories you have together at Eastern? When I was the President of EMU's chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery, Rick and I piloted the ACM entry in the EMU Float-a-thon. We flipped the "craft" and got soaked in the Huron River! As it was also raining, we couldn't dry out, so we waited under the Superior Street Bridge for a ride back to the main campus. We also had to stay with the "craft" which was constructed using four empty beer kegs to make it float. We had to return the kegs to get the deposit back for ACM. So we couldn't just walk back. Rick let me wear his EMU windbreaker, and we huddled together for warmth under the bridge. That's where we had our first kiss! Since then we've always thought of that bridge as "our bridge," and we often stop to kiss even now when we go over the Superior Street Bridge.

If married/engaged did they propose on campus? If so where? Rick proposed to me at his apartment just off campus on Washtenaw Ave. He had the engagement ring engraved. He thought he'd asked them to engrave it 11/9/79, but it said 11/10/79. So we ate Chinese carryouts and played board games all night, so he could propose just after midnight! His parents were planning to visit Rick and his brother, Gary, in Ann Arbor that day, so we shared our engagement news with them then.

Years attended Eastern:
Ruth: 1975-1979, BBA in Operations Research and Information Systems, with a minor in Music
Rick: 1972-1977, BBA in General Business, with a minor in History.
