EMU Love Story: Brian and Rachel Whitmore

by Chris Vilag, Published June 20, 2011

Names: Rachel (Reynolds) Whitmore, Brian Whitmore

Relationship Status: Married

Anniversary Date: Friends since 2001, Began dating May 2004, Married August 15, 2008

Do you have children? How many? No children...two great dogs (Simon - 5 year old German Shepherd, Wiley 3 month old Golden Retriever)

How did you meet? Thru EMU's Greek system at the 2001 Impact Retreat. I am an alumna of Sigma Delta Tau sorority and Brian is an alumnus of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity (no longer has an EMU chapter - disbanded in 2006/2007)

Where was your first date? After being good friends since 2001, we had our first real date in May 2004. We went to Gallup Park in Ann Arbor to walk around and get to know each other more as a couple.

Any cute memories you have together at Eastern? Our time in the Greek system allowed us to participate in events, social gatherings and many more outings together. We both loved participating in Greek Week events and to raise money for our chapter's philanthropy mission.

We lived only a few houses away from each other. Before we were dating, we would both look to see if the other's lights were on and casually try to run into each other outside. Neither of us knew that we were both interested in something more than friends during that time. The stomach butterflies that we both had then are still alive today when we see each other at home...even after a decade of being in each other's lives.

If married/engaged did they propose on campus? If so where? Brian proposed in 2008 after we had both graduated. I was working for EMU at the EMU Foundation during that time, where they threw me a wedding shower before the big day. It is a memory I will never forget since the people in the Alumni Office and the Foundation had seen me progress from a student assistant in the Alumni Office (2002-2005), to a full time employee at the Foundation (2005-2010).

Once we decided to move to Madison, WI, we took a day to walk around campus and visit our old dorms, sorority/fraternity house, and favorite classroom buildings to reminisce one more time about the place that brought us together.

Years attended Eastern:
Rachel: 2001 - 2005 BS Public Relations/Marketing, 2006-2008 MS Integrated Marketing Communication
Brian: 1999-2006 BS Communication and Criminology

Any romantic advice you would give to students: Being friends with someone first allows for such a deep love to form. We were best friends for years before we started dating, and then dated for 4 years before we got married. All else aside, we are still best friends!
