Rob Powers ('88) earned his degree in Telecommunication and Film at EMU. He is the lead sports anchor for WABC-TV in New York City, reporting sports news for the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. weekday newscasts. WABC, the ABC-owned television station in New York, is the most watched station in the nation's largest media market. It attracts a larger audience than any other television station in the nation.
He joined WABC's Eyewitness News team as weekend sports anchor in 2009 and took on his current role in January 2011. He covers sports news for New York and New Jersey professional sports teams, as well as national and local sports news. Before coming to New York, Powers was the longtime sports director and 5:30 news anchor at ABC-owned WTVG-TV in Toledo, Ohio. While there, Rob was the television play-by-play voice for University of Toledo football and basketball and the Toledo Mud Hens baseball team.
This is Rob's fourth television sports anchor/reporter job since 1990. His past resides are in Binghamton, N.Y., and Indianapolis. The winner of four Emmy Awards, Powers has also been named the New York State Broadcasters Association First Place Award Winner three times. He has been honored with a mayoral proclamation, recognition in local and national publications and has the distinction of having an autographed hot dog bun on display at the legendary Tony Packo's in Toledo.
Powers last visited EMU's campus in 2009. His volunteer community service activities have included ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, the Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon and speaking at schools and events. Additionally, Rob has mentored young broadcasters who today are employed across the nation at places including ESPN, Detroit, Cleveland, Washington and Toledo. He lives in New York.
