Names: Matt and Laura Mortier
Relationship Status: Married
Anniversary Date: June 22, 2013
Do you have children? How many? None, but eventually
How did you meet? We had mutual friends and met one night playing late night volleyball in University Park.
Where was your first date? After being study buddies for several weeks in Halle Library, Matt asked Laura out on a date. To his surprise, she initially said "no." After some time passed, Laura (wisely) changed her mind. We went to a movie on our first date - although we don't remember which one - but there has been no looking back since!
Any cute memories you have together at Eastern? TONS! Running for Homecoming King and Queen, living in the same building in The Village our Junior year, fun times being a part of Greek Life, helping with New Student Orientation, attending EMU Football games (especially in the pouring rain), frequent visits to Pub 13, and being a part of the latest round TRUEMU banners around campus.
If married/engaged did they propose on campus? If so where? Matt, armed with roses, picked up Laura on a snowy, February evening in a limo and drove to dinner at Sonic (one of Laura's favorite burger places). After eating quickly because the limo took up too many drive-up lanes, the next stop was EMU. Matt walked Laura to the gazebo in University Park (remember the first time they met?!). Matt already shoveled a path in the snow and led Laura to the gazebo that was lit up with twinkle lights. Inside the gazebo was a blanket and basket with a homemade book inside. The book was a dictionary that Matt created with important parts of their relationship. Words with their proper definitions are on the left-hand side and specific memories that coincide with the word are on the right. The last word in the book was "Union" and the last page said those special words, "Will you marry me?" Of course she said yes! Back in the limo, Laura called all of her and Matt's family to share the good news. Little did she know, but when they arrived back to Matt's apartment, her and his entire family were there waiting to celebrate with balloons, champagne and cake!
What are the two of you doing now? Matt now works for EMU in the Admissions Office as a Senior Admissions Adviser. Matt is also on the Alumni Association Board of Directors and is the Membership Chair of the Young Alumni Council. Laura works for Canton Township as a Special Events Coordinator for Leisure Services and is also back at Eastern working on an Elementary Education Teaching Certificate. Laura is currently the Chair of the Young Alumni Council. Matt and Laura reside in Canton, MI.
Years attended Eastern:
Matt: 2006-2009 BBA in Business Management and 2011-2012 MA Educational Leadership in Higher Ed/Student Affairs
Laura: 2006-2010 BA Psychology, Communication minor
Any romantic advice you would give to students: Be honest and share your feelings with one another. Oh, and longer engagements are OK if you're young - it is worth the wait.
