Alexander Simpson '07 graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a bachelor's of science degree in social work. Alex was an extremely active student at EMU. He volunteered for the Holman Learning Center and the Upward Bound progra. He served on the Student Judicial Board, participated in EMU's Meals on Wheels and Alternative Spring Break, and was a New Student Orientation Assistant. He was a brother of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, earning numerous awards and leading his chapter to its recognition as Greek Organization of the Year and Chapter of the Year at the regional level. Alex also helped organize the first Youth College Day, bringing foster care youth to EMU, encouraging them to seek higher education and empowerment.
Alex went on to achieve his master's degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan and his Doctor of Jurisprudence from Indiana University Maurer School of Law. At the University of Michigan, he represented the School of Social Work in the Michigan Student Assembly, served on the Student Services Student/Faculty Committee, and was an active member of Social Welfare Action and the Association of Black Social Work Students. At Indiana University, Alex represented the Law School in the Indiana University Student Association, served as Vice President of the Family Law Society, was Chair of the Student Bar Association, served as Managing Editor for the Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies, co-founded the Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality, served on the National Board of Directors for the National Black Law Students Association, served on the Sherman Minton Moot Court Executive Board, and was a member of the Law School's national mock trial and national moot court teams.
Alex began working at the law firm of Bodman, PLC in 2009 as a summer associate. Today, he is an associate of the firm's Enterprise Procurement and Intellectual Property groups. He represents clients in commercial contracts ranging from information technology outsourcing, supply, vendor service, marketing, sponsorship, software license and human resources/benefits arrangements.
Alex performs a substantial amount of pro bono work and has earned awards from the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and by the Legal Aid and Defender Association. He currently serves as a member of the law firm's Pro Bono Committee. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Wolverine Bar Association, as a mentor for their VIP Mentoring Program and as chair of their Summer Clerkship Program. He also serves on the Board of Directors for VSA Michigan and Centro Multicultural La Familia. In his spare time, Alex volunteers as head football coach for 2nd and 3rd graders, is active in the EMU Black Alumni Association and serves as an alumni advisor to Kappa Alpha Psi.
