Frequently Asked Questions

1.      What are the admission requirements for the Certificate? 

If you wish to complete the 18-credit hour Graduate Certificate in Dementia , you must apply and be accepted into the Graduate School at EMU.   You DO NOT have to be enrolled in a master's degree program.  A minimum undergraduate grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale is required.  GRE scores are not required. 

2.      How do I apply for admission to the Graduate School? 

There are two ways to apply for admission. 

Ø      To request a paper application, contact the Office of Admissions, Eastern Michigan University, P.O. Box 970, Ypsilanti, MI 48197.  Telephone 734.487.3060 or 1.800.GO.TO.EMU.  Completed application, the $30 application fee and your official transcripts should be sent to the Office of Admissions.  Please note that it is possible to enroll in a dementia course prior to acceptance to the Graduate School.  This course will count as credits towards the Certificate in Dementia . 

Ø      To apply online, go to www.emich.edu.  Put the cursor over “Future Students” (don't click it).  The drop down box will appear on the right.  Click on the second link “Apply to EMU”. The online application fee is $20. 

Ø      To receive guidelines for writing your personal statement or help with completing the application process, call Jo Campbell at 734.487.8579 or e-mail jo.campbell@emich.edu  Be sure to ask Jo about the Gerontology Certificate in Dementia program code (SW99-99) which needs to be accurate on your application form. 

3.      How do I enroll in one of the dementia courses? 

Please call Jo Campbell at 734.487.8579.  She will send you the registration form.

4.      How much does a course cost? 

One-credit hour course (tuition and fees):  Undergraduate: $297.85 Graduate: $456.60

Two-credit hour course (tuition and fees):  Undergraduate: $555.70 Graduate: $873.20

5.      How long will it take to finish the Certificate? 

If you take one course per semester including the Spring and Summer semesters you can complete the program in 1.5 years.  However, you can take up to three years to complete the program. 

6.      I am an undergraduate student interested in taking courses on dementia at EMU.  Can I do this? 

Yes.  Undergraduate students interested in learning more about the dementia topics can enroll in most of the courses.  We strongly encourage you to begin with GERT 518/477 "Innovations in Dementia" which is offered Fall and Winter semesters. 

7.      Do I need to have experience in caring for someone with dementia to enroll in the program? 

No. Our courses and assignments are customized to meet the educational needs of those new to the field of dementia as well as those who have been working in the field for many years.  We invite you to learn more about the rewarding opportunities available in this field.

9.      Are any of the dementia courses offered online?

No.  At this time we do not offer any courses online.
