Special Features of the Certificate
Person-Centered Philosophy
The Alzheimer's Education Program (AEP) is recognized nationally and internationally as a pioneer in the field of person-centered for people with dementia and their families. Our philosophy embraces the belief that the essence of individuals, their strengths, individuality and potential for living are the key elements when designing and providing quality dementia . Promoting autonomy, dignity, normalcy and meaningful relationships within a nurturing environment are core values of the Alzheimer's Education Program (AEP). We ‘practice what we preach' when conceptualizing education materials, training demonstrations, and health models. This person-centered approach drives all aspects of our team's work including the provision of opportunities for professional and personal growth. Evidence-Based Practice
Course materials are continually updated to reflect current theory and research data related to the medical and psychosocial aspects of dementia.
Field-Based Learning
Innovative Models in Programming. Students are required to visit and participate in innovative programs designed for persons with moderate to advanced dementia. You will observe and evaluate the effectiveness of individualized interventions and their impact on the group process. These group work models represent a unique approach to programming that you are not likely to see anywhere else.
Work Based Experiences. Several courses include ‘hands-on' assignments that can be carried out in the student's own workplace. (Clinical sites will be provided by the AEP team as needed.) Students are required to integrate and apply concepts learned in reading materials and class discussion, reflect on current practice and refine their skills in interacting with persons with dementia. Personal mentoring onsite will be provided by the AEP team.
