The Foundations Area offers nine core courses in studio art and art history required by the Art Department's degree programs. The selection of required courses varies between programs. The Foundations classes aim to provide students with a solid introduction to design, drawing and art history. The students develop a repertoire of basic studio skills and build the vocabulary (visual and verbal) necessary to create, analyze and discuss artwork. The courses stress creative problem-solving and critical thinking and provide students with a base of experience for further studies in art and related disciplines. Courses offered:

Bio: John DeHoog received his BFA (1996) from Northern Michigan University, and his MFA (Furniture Design, 2000) from Rhode Island School of Design. Most of his work explores the boundaries and limitations of function within the context of furniture and other useful objects. This year he is involved in a research project which explores the combination of the materials Kevlar and carbon fiber with wood, for lightweight chair design. His work has been shown nationally and internationally, and currently he exhibits throughout the greater Detroit area. Recent publications, exhibitions and/or presentations:
Artist Statement: My background is in furniture design, so most of what I make involves wood, and references furniture or usefulness in some way without being bound to traditional forms. Like most people who work seriously with wood, I have a deep respect for craft and see wood as a somewhat mysterious material with eccentric qualities. Part of my interest in the material is in discovering how to best work with its physical and visual qualities. While part if me is indeed a wood worker and furniture maker, I also like to work with other various materials and in other ways. I am very interested in sculpture, and indeed some of my work is more akin to sculpture, with little reference to utility. During the teaching of a summer course at the Parson’s Center, I have the chance to make small sculptures installed in the Michigan north woods. The first two images are examples of this.
