In both the undergraduate and graduate watercolor programs, students learn a variety of traditional and contemporary watercolor techniques while developing a unique and individual direction in their work. The overall goal of the program is to nurture and develop independent, creative thinking, as well as a dynamic artistic style. All levels of watercolor students participate in watercolor exhibitions at the Eagle Crest Conference Center, sponsored by the student organization Watercolorists at EMU. These exhibitions usually include openings, award presentations, and receptions. In addition to participating in Watercolorists at EMU exhibitions and
events, a number of graduate and undergraduate Watercolor students actively
show their work in local, state and national exhibitions. Some program
alumni also serve on the board of the Michigan Watercolor Society and
have had their art featured in national publications. Courses offered:

Bio: Maria Fiorenza Ruggiero was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She received a BFA in Studio Art from Michigan State University and a MFA in Painting from Kent State University in 2001. She began teaching at EMU in 2001. Recent publications, exhibitions and/or presentations:
Artist Statement: I construct my compositions by drawing from a combination of real still-life objects along with elements that I've photographed and manipulated using digital cameras and software. In addition to traditional still life objects such as fruit, glassware and cloth, I incorporate sections of both current and former work by using completed, or sometimes partially completed, paintings as still-life elements in my compositions. My set-ups are generally not static in that after my initial drawing I will move, add and remove objects, (such as mirrors) in order to complete the composition. The mirrors and paintings of paintings add to the visual complexity of the pieces; these elements also allow me to examine and illustrate, to a certain extent, the process and direction of my work.
