Visual Arts Education Program Requirements:

(1) Basic Studies (47 or 36 cr. hrs.)
General Education Program requirements PRIOR to FALL 2007

(2) Major Content Area (54 cr. hrs.)

Art studio and art history
Foundation Area
(3 cr. hrs. each)
Drawing I, Drawing II, 2D Design, 3D Design, Life Drawing, Non-Western Art History*, Art History Survey I or II, 19th Century Art, and 20th Century Art

Media Electives (3 cr. hrs. each)
Elect 6 from the following 11 mediums. Of the 6 media, you must have at least 2 from the 3D-media category.

3D Media:
Textiles, Ceramics, Sculpture, Jewelry
2D Media:
Graphic Design, Printmaking, Photography, Drawing III, Painting, Watercolor, Computer Imaging


Concentration Area
(3 cr. hrs. each)
Choose 1 medium from the above 10 mediums as your concentration. Take three advanced level courses on that medium.

The following courses can be taken prior to admission
to the College of Education:

ART317 Teaching of Art - 3 hrs. (prerequisite of ART416)
SPGN251 Education of Exceptional Children - 3 hrs.
Corequisites (the following two courses to be taken concurrently):
EDPS322 Human Development and Learning - 4 hrs.
FETE201 Field Experience 1 - (Service learning) - 1hr.

Admission to the College of Education (COE) requires: Attending COE secondary group advising, GPA 2.5 or higher (overall and in Art), 56 cr. hrs. (at least 12 at EMU), pass of the MTTC Basic Skills test, and application

Phase I - After admission to the College of Education
SOFD328 Schools in Multicultural Society - 3 hrs.
Corequisites (the following four courses to be taken concurrently):

CURR305 Secondary Curriculum and Methods - 3hrs.
ART331 Technology in Art Education - 3hrs.
EDPS340
Introduction to Assessment & Evaluation (Visual Arts Education only section) - 3hrs.
FETE301 Field Experience II (Elementary) - 1hr.

Phase II
ART416 Art Methods and Materials - 3hrs.
(prerequisite: ART317)
Corequisites (the following two courses to be taken concurrently):
RDNG311 Teaching Reading in the Secondary School - 3hrs.
FETE402 Field Experience III (Secondary):
Diversity and Adaptation in Literacy - 1 hr.

100 clock hours of pre-student teaching

You are recommended to take and pass the MTTC Subject Area test (#95 Visual Arts Education) the semester before or of student teaching.

Phase III - must apply for student teaching in advance (by January 15 for fall or June 15 for winter)

Student Teaching (Art) - 6 hrs.
EDUC497 Student Teaching (Art) - 6 hrs.

Note: Students must receive a grade C or higher in all professional and methods courses.

*ART109 (strongly recommended), ART421, ART422, ART425, ART430, or other available Non-Western art history courses can meet the Non-Western Art History requirement.
