The
Visual Arts Education program within the Art
Department at Eastern
Michigan University introduces students to various contemporary visual arts education approaches for
bringing critical and meaningful art learning experience to K-12 classrooms.
A comprehensive curriculum that integrates art
history, art
criticism, art production, aesthetics, visual culture study,
and other subject areas, provide opportunities for students to engage
in holistic and higher level thinking.
The study of art encourages individuals to question, reason and imagine.
Art is an active and interactive endeavor; art influences and effects. Art
is not
merely a product; it is a process that engages the individual in critical
thinking and problem solving. The Visual Arts Education Program emphasizes the necessity
to
utilize these skills in curricular development.
The Visual Arts Education program also addresses other important aspects of teacher
preparation. Efforts are made to achieve the following practices: originality,
fluency, flexibility, innovative planning and teaching methodologies, authentic
learning practices, technology integration, writing across the curriculum,
integration and the appreciation of diverse cultures and ethnicities.
The Visual Arts Education program produces effective art educators who are curious,
ethical, productive and contributing learners, participants and leaders in
a
democratic and diverse society.
Committed & enthusiastic
faculty
make the overall visual arts education program a dynamic one.
You
will learn from distinguished faculty members in both the
College of Education & the Department of Art.
In addition to the classes taught by visual arts education faculty, the studio
component is handled by artist/teachers while art historians teach art history.
