AS-L Faculty Fellows & Resources
How do Faculty Members get involved in Academic Service-Learning?
Faculty work with various communities and community service agencies to assess the needs of a community and design an AS-L assignment which simultaneously meets the need while enhancing and supporting course objectives. The Office of AS-L serves as a liaison or resource for community connections, AS-L evaluation strategies and networking. Faculty members may contact the office for ideas, information, connection, or any other necessary assistance. To see a list of some of the community service agencies partnered to The Office of Academic Service-Learning at Eastern Michigan University see Community Agencies link.
What is a Faculty Fellow?
AS-L Faculty Fellows learn the theories, implementation, and assessment of academic service-learning as well as strategies to integrate AS-L methodology into their courses. The Office of Academic Service-Learning supports release time for a group of AS-L Faculty Fellows each fall and winter semester. The AS-L Faculty Fellows attend a weekly faculty development seminar, which prepares faculty to integrate an academic service-learning component into courses. They leave the seminar with a revised syllabus, community partners, and membership in a university-wide academic service-learning network. A list of courses, which include an academic service-leaning component is available. See the list of courses.
How to become a Faculty Fellow
Applications are sent to all full-time, tenure-track faculty. To apply, faculty submit an application to the Office of Academic Service-Learning. The office reviews the applications and selects faculty participants, and notifies all recipients. The selected faculty are released quarter-time in order to participate in a semester-long, weekly seminar. Seminars are held each Fall and Winter semester.
