Edward Garrett
Edward Garrett is a Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature. Professor Garrett is adapting Linguistics 310 – African American Language to incorporate an academic service-learning component. A focus of the Linguistics 310 course will be the interconnection between linguistic structure and education The as-l component will involve a partnership with youth in Ypsilanti and Detroit.

Robert A. Jones
Robert Jones is Assistant Professor of Urban and Regional Planning in the Department of Geography and Geology at Eastern Michigan University. He specializes in urban design, land use issues, neighborhood planning, and urban redevelopment. He also has a background in architecture, and has worked on numerous international design and planning projects.
Professor Jones is developing service-learning components for several courses he teaches, including GEOG 559 (Planning and Preservation Studio). In this course, graduate students are developing a community plan for Ypsilanti's Midtown neighborhood located just south of the EMU campus. This planning effort is intended to address a number of issues and problems in the area, including parking, traffic safety, rental property maintenance, residential density, and home ownership. When completed the plan will be shared with neighborhood residents, the city, and, the university.

Krish Narayanan
Krish Narayanan is an Assistant professor in the Computer Science department. She joined the department in Fall 2002 before which she worked for the auto industry for three years. Her specialties include data modeling, data management, and software design and development.
Professor Narayanan is integrating service learning into COSC 481/581. In these courses, students will be working with local community agencies to determine their software needs. They will also design and implement applications/tools to meet those needs.

Ulrich Reinhardt
Uli Reinhardt is an Assistant Professor in Biology at Eastern Michigan University. He started at Eastern in 2000. His research specialty is fish biology with a focus on behavior of salmon and Great Lakes non-native fish.
Uli is integrating Service Learning into his field class in the Galapagos Islands that he has taught twice previously. He has set up a volunteer-driven conservation research project with Earthwatch Institute and botanist from the Charles Darwin Research Station on Galapagos. The aim is to protect a threatened forest from invasive plants. 30-60 international volunteers will join him in 2005. His EMU field class in May 2005 will be the “trail-blazers” of this volunteer project- they will help him set up the work and find the strengths and weaknesses in his project design.

Philip Smith
Philip Smith is a Professor in the Special Education Department. Philip is developing his SPCI 350 – Introduction to Mental Retardation to incorporate an academic service-learning component. The as-l component will enhance the course by establishing relationships between students and individuals with cognitive impairments.
