Volunteering Information
Volunteerism is an important dimension in your application to professional school. Some professional programs (veterinary medicine, physician's assistant) mandate volunteer time, others (medical schools) strongly suggest it. Volunteering in both medical and non-medical settings provides you with both, a better understanding of the medical fields of practice, as well as personal growth. For many medical schools there is no set amount of volunteer time required, but you should be able to discuss your involvement at length and its impact on you. Accordingly, seek experiences which put you in contact with patients and which allow you to directly view provideres of medical care.

Volunteers may work in the wild animal infirmiry or in the care of resident wildlife. This is good general animal exposure experience, but will not count as veterinarian contact experience. |
Veterinary colleges strongly suggest 240 hours (MSU) of working experience with a veterinarian or group of veterinarians. Consequently, pre-veterinary students should investigate volunteer or paid opportunities with their family or neighborhood veterinarian.
