Name: Sandeep Dayal

Time at EMU: 1995-1997

Accomplishments while at EMU: Meta Hellwig Graduate Research Award

Where he is now: A Postdoctoral Fellow at the Natioanl Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD

His thoughts on his time at EMU: "My experience at Eastern put me in a good position here (in his Ph.D. program at M. D. Anderson Cancer Research Center in Houston) for several reasons. Basically I was SO much better prepared for the Ph.D. program than I was when I started at EMU. And the science I learned there comes into use in ways that I didn't necessarily expect. Of course the benchwork and writing were tremendously helpful since I had almost no molecular biology experience beforehand. But I didn't expect that the teaching and coursework would come in so handy. In our graduate school, we choose a program (Genes and Development is mine) and we focus on that area for our coursework, journal clubs, seminars, etc. But because of my exprience at EMU, I have a breadth of knowledge that a lot of other people don't. And most surprisingly, I've used the information that I learned from teaching Zoology lab extensively. I'm kinda thought of as the resident expert on non-model organisms, phylogeny, and zoology."
