Biography:
In my experiences as both a trained scientist and a science educator, I have observed a disconnect between how science is taught in classrooms and how science is conducted in research laboratories. One possible explanation for this schism between science education and scientific investigation may be that science teachers who have not been trained as scientists hold conceptual understandings of the nature of science (NOS) that are quite different from scientific investigators who have been formally trained in research laboratories. I am interested in conceptual understandings of NOS held by science teachers and how their views influence the extent to which they incorporate inquiry-based teaching practices into their classrooms. I am also interested in how teacher experiences in research laboratories impact their conceptual understandings of NOS.
