Majors should start with BIO 110 followed by BIO 120 in their freshman year. Students who come in with level one math should take the math placement test. A minimum of math level 2 is required for BIO 110. Students with level two math placement should take MATH 098 concurrently with BIO 110. Chemistry courses should also be started in the freshman year if possible in order to fulfill the requirements for the 300- and 400-level biology courses. The core biology lectures and laboratory should be completed no later than the end of the junior year. Since BIO 301 Genetics is a prerequisite for both BIO 305 and BIOL 315, it should be completed as soon as possible to avoid any delay in graduation. At least a C must be achieved in each core course in order to move on within the core sequence. The 15 semester hours of electives allow the student to specialize. Although some electives can be taken as early as the sophomore year, most will be taken in the junior and senior years. Students are strongly advised to elect the remaining core course as one of their electives.
Students who plan to pursue graduate work in biology or who are in a pre-professional program should select CHEM 371-373 Organic Chemistry I-II with lab. It is highly recommended that students who plan to pursue graduate work in biology also take MATH 120 Calculus I, MATH 121 Calculus II, MATH 170 Elementary Statistics, and CHEM 451-453 Biochemistry I-II with lab.
All students considering a major in biology are strongly encouraged to make an appointment with a Biology Department advisor in their freshman year. The advisor will help the student plan his/her individualized program of study, counsel the student on future changes to his/her program and follow the student's progress throughout his/her career at EMU.
