Undergraduate: The Biology department offers a biology major, which provides a broad foundation in biology. It also provides the necessary background for students pursuing careers in medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, and other health-related fields. Students planning to teach biology at the secondary level should also select the biology major. The biology major prepares students for career opportunities in diverse fields ranging from ecology and environmental biology to biomedical research and biotechnology. The biology major also prepares students for graduate work in various specializations in biology at major research universities across the country.
Graduate: The department offers a Master of Science degree program with concentrations in general biology, ecosystem biology (aquatic and terrestrial), molecular/cellular biology, physiology, and community college biology teaching.
Graduate assistantships are generally available. All applicants for admission to the biology Master of Science program are encouraged to apply for an assistantship. The department believes that the experience in teaching and research gained as a graduate assistant is a valuable part of the graduate program in biology for those who can be accommodated in these positions.
