National Panhellenic Council

National Panhellenic Council is an umbrella organization for 26 inter/national women's fraternities and sororities. Here at Eastern Michigan University the Panhellenic Council represents 9 chapters of autonomous organization as a social, Greek-letter society for college women.

Mission Statement: The National Panhellenic Conference supports its women's fraternities by promoting values, education, leadership, friendships, cooperation and citizenship.

What is Panhellenic?

The word "panhellenic" is defined as "All Greek". The National Panhellenic Council (NPC) was organized in 1902 in recognition of the need to maintain high standards of the sorority life and good relations among all sororities. Originally, the primary interest of the NPC was organizing recruitment, rules for new member periods and initiation, as well as working with charters. Eventually, however, the desire for intra-sorority spirit spurred NPC to become a forum for discussing questions of mutual interest and concern. At present, twenty-six sororities compose the NPC.

The Eastern Michigan University Panhellenic Council is the local organization charged with fulfilling the objectives of the NPC. The unifying, coordinating, and governing body of the sorority community serves a multitude of purposes: a liaison between sororities, campus organizations, and community leaders; a program board for speakers and workshops; a self governing judicial board; and an advocate for Greek Unity. In addition, Panhellenic council organizes the recruitment process. Thus, you are about to experience what Panhellenic does firsthand.

Panhellenic Creed

We, as Undergraduate Members of women's fraternities, stand for good scholarship, for guarding of good health, for maintenance of fine standards, and for serving, to the best of our ability, our college community. Cooperation for furthering fraternity life, in harmony with its best possibilities, is the ideal that shall guide our fraternity activities.

We, as Fraternity Women, stand for service through the development of character inspired by the close contact and deep friendship of individual fraternity and Panhellenic life. The opportunity for wide and wise human service, through mutual respect and helpfulness, is the tenet by which we strive to live.
