Starting The Semster Off Right

Locations to study, and tips to help make your study time more productive.

AcademicsGo to class.

  • Go to Class, and go to class!
  • Put each class time in a planner; know where to be when.
  • Be on time. Professors and late arrivers don't mix. Empty desks and late arrivers don't mix either.
  • Many professors take the first class meeting seriously and expect students to take notes and have textbooks with them.

Have books and school supplies before classes begin.

  • Books, all books.
  • Planner
  • Notebook
  • Folder
  • Pen/Pencil
  • Highlighter

Walk around campus a few days before classes to find the building and room for each class. Ask yourself some of these questions:

  • How long does it take to get to each class?
  • Do I want eat breakfast, take a shower, or do yoga?
  • Do I need time to change my outfit a billion times?
  • Can I see friends after one class without being late for the next one?

Commuters: A day or two before classes, do a test drive.

  • Park in the farthest parking space, clock the walk to your farthest class, and add, at least, 15 minutes to that time.

Commuters, remember the snow will slow you down.

  • Give yourself time to wipe off your car.
  • Leave 10 minutes earlier for every 10 minutes of your regular commute (i.e. a 30 minute commute becomes 60 minutes).

Know your test and paper dates.

  • Use the syllabus. Write down big papers, exams, and tests in a planner.
  • Get reading assignments in a planner and keep up with them.
  • Update yourself about world events. Most professors expect students to be informed. Skim newspapers or weekly news magazines.
  • Start reading assignments right away-catch ups aren't always doable. Read the itty bitty "side notes" too.

Find "non-class" stuff to take your mind off.

Additional Information

  • Memorize your Student ID Number and your Social Security Number. You'll need one or the other for anything "official" at EMU (i.e. library books, financial aid, student employment).
  • Take notes even if professors post a set online or hand a set out. Tricky professors leave things out of "public" notes.
  • Talk with your roommates the night before. If you share a shower, make a schedule so everyone knows their turn.
  • Have a personal routine. Know how much sleep you need, when you study best, and when you need to chill. It will relieve stress and anxiety.
