Reading Your Textbooks
Reading Do’s
- Understand you’ll probably have more reading in college than ever before.
- Make sure you’re not distracted when you’re reading.
- Read in a place with good lighting.
- Read for an hour or hour-and-a-half, and then take a 15-minute break.
- Read before classes or between classes.
- Highlight important information while reading.
- Don’t highlight everything.
- Highlight at least one thing per page to help the topic jump out.
- Write notes in the margins of your textbooks to jog your memory about the info on that page.
- Answer and/or read the “review” questions at the end of chapters.
- Read carefully, many exam questions often come directly from the reading.
- Write down important page numbers. Use the inside covers, or your notes.
Reading Don’ts
- It’s best to avoid sitting in bed, or lying on a couch. You’ll fall asleep.
- Reading and hunger don’t mix. Eat before hand, and bring snacks for later.
- Don’t try to fit everything into the night before—you’ll end up skimming or skipping important stuff.
