Registration and Class Schedule

The lingo and how-to of registration takes awhile to remember. Keep this list close and use EMU’s resources often to answer your questions.

General Information

  • A course with a Pre-requisite means you must have taken, and passed, a specific class before taking the pre-req course.
  • Add/Drop Time is a short period of time at the beginning of each semester when students can add or drop classes from their schedule. If a student wants to leave a class after add/drop time they must officially withdraw to avoid a failing grade.
  • You must withdraw from every class if you no longer want to take it—without officially withdrawing you will fail if you stop going to class and stop doing the assigned work. A W for withdrawn will show up on your transcript, but a failing grade will not.
  • Classes with a lab require an additional meeting time outside of the regular class meeting time. Labs are usually hands-on, interactive, and are never optional.
  • Transcripts are the university’s record of student grade/graduation progress. Your transcript shows each class you take and each grade you receive during your time at EMU. To transfer to EMU, a transcript must be sent from each higher-learning institution you’ve attended.
  • Professors place certain required-reading materials on reserve at the library. Reserves have a short “check-out” time and are not in the library’s stacks. Request a reserve at the front information desk.
  • Some students take Spring and/or Summer Semester Classes. These classes are used to take pressure off the fall/winter semester class load, to graduate early, to catch up after time off, and/or to "re-take" a class for a better grade. Spring/Summer Semesters offer less class options, and financial aid must be applied for separately.
